As everybody waits to board Brad Pitt’s Bullet Train next weekend, it was an unexceptional period at the box office.

DC League of Super-Pets, an animation action-adventure with a voice cast led by Dwayne Johnson (Krypto, canine pal of Superman, voiced by John Krasinski) and Kevin Hart (Ace, one of the shelter pets who also have superpowers), opened on top with a very pet-friendly $23 million.

The superhero comedy movie, which marks Jared Stern’s directing debut (Sam Levine also directs), has other impressive talents in its voice roster: Keanu Reeves (Batman), Olivia Wilde (Lois Lane), Kate McKinnon (Lulu), Diego Luna (Chip), Jameela Jamil (Wonder Woman) and Jemaine Clement (Aquaman), among others.

Jordan Peele’s Nope held well on its second weekend and collected $18.55 million for a number two finish. After two weekends, Peele’s third horror outing, with well-received performances by Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, Steven Yeun, and Brandon Perea, has bagged $80.6 million.

On its fourth frame, Chris Hemsworth’s Thor: Love and Thunder hit the $300 million domestic benchmark and placed third. Taika Waititi’s second Thor feature directing gig (after Thor: Ragnarok), also starring Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Tessa Thompson, Russell Crowe, Dave Bautista, Vin Diesel, and Bradley Cooper, earned $13.1 million on its fourth week.

The Minions claimed the fourth spot with $10.88 million. Minions: The Rise of the Gru has now amassed a $320.4 million total after five weeks.

Still going strong on its tenth week was Top Gun: Maverick which stayed in the magic five with $8.2 million. Tom Cruise’s biggest hit in his career crossed the $650 million North American benchmark.

Rounding out the rest of the top ten were, in order: Where the Crawdads Sing, $7.5 million; Elvis, $5.8 million, $2.5 million; Jurassic World Dominion, $2.08 million; and B.J. Novak’s directing debut, Vengeance, which stars him, Isabella Amara, Nathaniel Augustson, and Grayson Berry, bowed with $1.75 million.

Internationally, DC League of Super-Pets was also numero uno with $18.4 million in more than 60 territories. The computer-animated film, produced by Warner Animation Group, generated $41.4 million worldwide. Brazil, Mexico, the United Kingdom, and France contributed heftily to that tally.

The Minions are also still on a roll offshore, drawing $25.4 million in nearly 80 territories. Those little yellow gibberish-talking creatures are proving to be giants at the box office. To date, their latest movie has chalked up $390 million internationally and a global cume of $710.4 million.

Thor’s hammer is also mighty strong overseas. Thor: Love and Thunder captured another $20.8 million.

But this year’s box office success story belongs to Tom Cruise’s Maverick which reached the $671 million offshore benchmark. Globally, the blockbuster has now earned an astonishing $1.32 billion. Billions, folks.

Japan’s love affair with dinosaurs was proven once more when Jurassic World: Dominion strongly bowed there, adding to the movie’s offshore weekend take of $13.8 million.

Baz Luhrman’s Elvis, fired up by Austin Butler’s performance, hit the $100 million international milestone – $105.3 million, to be exact. The musical biopic has now picked up $234.3 million globally.

In China, the winner was its homemade Moon Man, directed by Zhang Chiyu, which earned a spectacular $148 million despite the shutdown of movie theaters in some areas due to the COVID-19 health crisis.

Moon Man is described as a sci-fi/comedy about how an astronaut becomes the last human in the universe when an asteroid obliterates earth and he gets stranded on the moon.
