Asian Australians in Hollywood

In celebrating Asian heritage month, please note how Asian Australian actors are fast gaining traction in Hollywood. Below are some names to watch out for.

Remy Hii was born in Queensland of Chinese-Malaysian descent. He gained international recognition for his role as Prince Jingim in the Netflix series Marco Polo. He played a pivotal role in the hit rom-com Crazy Rich Asians and also performed in the Marvel film Spider-Man: Far from Home. Mr. Hill will next be voicing roles in Buddy the Cat Rat, and Scarygirl.

 

Melbourne-born Chris Pang, known for his roles in Crazy Rich Asians, and Tomorrow, When the War Began, is of Chinese, Singaporean, and Taiwanese descent. He is a distant relative of none other than Bruce Lee, on his father’s side. Pang began his career as a model before appearing in numerous TV productions in Australia, including Home and Away. He has also appeared in Charlie’s Angels, Palm Springs, Blade of the 47th Ronin, Joy Ride, and more recently The Portable Door.  

 

Natalie Mendoza is best known for her role as Jackie Clunes in the British drama series Hotel Babylon. She also played Juno in the horror film The Descent, and its sequel The Descent Part 2. Earlier on in her career she appeared in the Golden Globe-winning film Moulin Rouge!. On the small screen, she landed roles in the series Surviving Evil, Farscape, Blue Bloods, Holby City, McDonald & Dodds, and South Pacific. With a passion for theater, she performed in stage productions on London’s West End as well as Broadway, in such plays as Miss Saigon, Here Lies Love, and Spider-Man: Turn off the Dark. Mendoza was born in Hong Kong to Australian TV personality Robin Jackson. Her father, Noel Mendoza, is a jazz pianist of Filipino descent. She was raised in Sydney and Melbourne and performed in musicals such as Sweet Charity and Les Miserables. She most recently appeared in the Leos Carax film Annette.  

 

Raised in Sydney, Australian Filipino actress Martha Millan currently stars in the hit drama The Cleaning Lady, playing Fiona De La Rosa. She has been in successful TV series, such as Law & Order: Special Victims Unit, Law & Order, Entourage, The OA, Succession, Madam Secretary, and more. Recently she was seen in the feature film The Drummer. Other film credits include My Dead Boyfriend, The Great New Wondering, and Falling for Grace. A successful model, she is the face of Nooch, a restaurant in New York City, as well as Clairol Natural Instincts. 

 

Australian-born Japanese actress Shioli Kutsuna is best known for her role as Ran Mori in Shinichi Kudo’s Written Challenge!, 125 Years Memory, The Outsider, The Swift, and Deadpool 2. She also appeared as a regular in the Apple TV+ sci-fi series Invasion, and the star-studded film Murder Mystery. She worked in Japanese films such as Beck, My Back Page, and Oh Lucy!  Kutsuna was raised in Sydney and relocated to Japan at the age of 14 to pursue her acting career.
