The 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival ended on Saturday, May 27, 2023, with the awarding of the coveted Palme d’Or to Anatomy of the Fall, directed by Justine Triet. The Palme d’Or was presented by Jane Fonda. The closing ceremony hosted by actress Chiara Mastroianni offered some surprises.

President of the jury, director Ruben Östlund, had explained that his approach was going to be “democratic” from the beginning to the end of the festival. “I like to listen to what everyone is saying about the different films. I have no intention of being an authority figure in any way,” he promised at the opening ceremony.

The two-time Palm d’Or-winning Swedish director and the members of his jury deliberated for many hours. Surrounded by director Maryam Touzani, actor Denis Ménochet, screenwriter/director Rungano Nyoni, actress/director Brie Larson, actor/director Paul Dano, writer Atiq Rahimi, director Damián Szifron, as well as director Julia Ducournau, Östlund presented the prize list among the 21 films presented in competition this year.

They are: Firebrand by Karim Aïnouz, Asteroid City by Wes Anderson, Rapito by Marco Bellocchio, Four Daughters by Kaouther Ben Hania, Last Summer by Catherine Breillat, About Dry Grasses by Nuri Bilge Ceylan, Homecoming by Catherine Corsini, The Zone of Interest by Jonathan Glazer, Club Zero by Jessica Hausner, May December by Todd Haynes, Monster by Hirokazu Koreeda, Kuolleet Lehdet by Aki Kaurismäki, The Old Oak by Ken Loach, Il Sol dell’avvenire by Nanni Moretti, La Chimera by Alice Rohrwacher, Black Flies by Jean-Stéphane Sauvaire, Banel e Adama by Ramata-Toulaye Sy, The Pot au Feu by Tran Anh Hùng, Anatomy of a Fall by Justine Triet, Youth by Wang Bing and Perfect Days by Wim Wenders.

Actress Anaïs Demoustier presented the Prix de la Caméra d’Or for the best first film to Inside the Yellow Cocoon Sheel by Thien An Pham. The Golden Eye for best documentary was shared this year by Four Daughters directed by Kaouther Ben Hania and The Mother of All Lies directed by Asmae El Moudir.

 

Actress Stacy Martin and director Ildikó Enyedi, President of the Short Films Jury and of La Cinef, awarded the Palme d’Or for best short film to 27 by Flóra Anna Buda with a Special Mention to Fár directed by Gunnur Martinsdóttir Schlüter.

Actor Orlando Bloom presented the Jury Prize to Fallen Leaves directed by Aki Kaurismäki. The Best Actress award was presented by actor Song Kang-ho to Merve Dizdar in About Dry Grasses directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. Actress Zar Amir Ebrahimi presented the Best Actor award to Kõji Yakusho in Perfect Days directed by Wim Wenders.

Actor John C. Reilly, President of the Un Certain Regard Jury, awarded the best screenplay award to Sakamoto Yuji for Monster directed by Kore-Eda Hirokazu.

Legendary filmmaker Roger Corman presented the Grand Prix alongside Quentin Tarantino to The Zone of Interest directed by Jonathan Glazer.

The Short Films and La Cinef Jury headed by Ildikó Enyedi and comprising Ana Lily Amirpour, Shlomi Elkabetz, Charlotte Le Bon and Karidja Touré awarded the 2023 La Cinef Prizes during a ceremony held in the Buñuel Theater, followed by the screening of the winning films.

 

La Cinef consisted of 16 student films, chosen out of 2,000 entries coming from 476 film schools around the world.
