Many Awards Contenders Doing Double Duty This Year
While many artists have given memorable performances this year, a few have managed multiple projects, with an ability to navigate different genres and characters. And a handful have earned multiple Golden Globes nominations for their work this year.
One example is Sebastian Stan, nominated for his lead comedy and drama roles in, respectively, A Different Man and The Apprentice. “This year has been memorable,” Stan shares. “I’ve had the chance to bring two films to audiences that are personally meaningful to me. Both my roles as Edward and as Donald Trump invite reflection on identity and power.”
Kate Winslet is nominated for leading roles in the drama film Lee, as well as limited series for The Regime.
Selena Gomez is another double contender this year, as lead TV actress for Only Murders in the Building, and supporting actress for the heavily nominated film Emilia Perez.
Nicole Kidman, nominated for the film Babygirl, this year also starred in the series Lioness, Expats, and The Perfect Couple. “I’m doing something I’ve dreamed of since I was a child,” she told the media when the film opened. “My work is my passion, and that’s why I’m always happy to take part in as many projects as I can. Acting makes me happy, and it also allows me to contribute to the industry by creating jobs for others.”
Zoe Saldana, her co-star in Lioness, portraying a CIA officer, Saldana was front and center again as a determined lawyer in Emilia Pérez, for which she is nominated. “I don’t really pay much attention to how often I appear in a given year,” Saldana said at a press conference. “What matters most to me is the depth of the characters I take on. If I end up landing a few significant roles in one year, I’m certainly not going to complain.” Saldana’s approach focuses on the substance of the roles she chooses, which has contributed to her continued visibility in 2024.
Timothée Chalamet is another actor whose year has been marked by a series of diverse roles. In addition to reprising his iconic role as Paul Atreides in Dune: Part Two, Chalamet took on the challenging role of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown, earning a nomination for the latter. “Being offered a role is always like receiving a gift,” he says. “When I manage to stand out in multiple roles in the same year, it feels like a true honor. I’m grateful for the opportunities to explore such different characters.” Chalamet’s ability to navigate between major franchise films and more nuanced, biographical performances has kept him in the conversation this year.
Saoirse Ronan also stood out with two projects this season. In The Outrun, she portrays a young woman trying to overcome her troubled past, while in Blitz, she plays a woman grappling with the devastation of World War II. “I became an actress to take on roles that are inspiring—not only for me but for the audience as well,” she says. “Playing characters who have a strong impact on people’s lives is something I value deeply.”
