Hend Sabry, Alia Bhatt Honored by the Golden Globes

The Golden Globes® announced that Tunisian actress Hend Sabry and Indian actress Alia Bhatt have been named this year’s recipients of the Omar Sharif Award and the Golden Globes Horizon Award, respectively, at a reception during the fifth edition of the Red Sea International Film Festival.

“We are honored to present the Omar Sharif Award to Hend Sarby, a truly iconic performer and humanitarian whose body of work reflects the depth, power, and global impact of Arab cinema, while paying tribute to Omar’s remarkable legacy as a pioneering Egyptian artist,” said Helen Hoehne, president of the Golden Globes. “We are equally thrilled to recognize and celebrate Alia Bhatt with the Golden Globes Horizon Award, celebrating her exceptional contributions to international cinema and the continued rise of the Middle East as a dynamic and influential hub for film and television on a global stage.”

Jomana Al-Rashid, chairwoman of the Red Sea Film Foundation, said: “As we continue to celebrate five years as a Foundation, we’re proud to be further cementing the Red Sea IFF’s position as a platform for filmmakers to achieve global recognition. For the first time, we are partnering with the Golden Globes – in a collaboration which carries special meaning and deepens international visibility for the remarkable talent rising from the Arab world, Asia, and Africa. It reflects a shared commitment to ensuring that our filmmakers receive the recognition — and the reach — that their work truly deserves. Together, we champion the future of this industry and are proud to be launching the Horizon Award to recognize emerging and undeniable talent. This is a landmark moment, and it is a privilege to come together in honoring Hend Sabry and Alia Bhatt —  two exceptional actors whose work continues to shape the screen industry.”

These awards honor the contributions of creative individuals throughout the Middle East, Asia and North Africa. Omar Sharif, the first Egyptian-born actor to win a Golden Globe, and ultimately a three-time Golden Globe winner for his performances in Lawrence of Arabia and Doctor Zhivago, remains a defining figure in the awards’ 80-year history. The Omar Sharif Award honors his legacy and influence on global cinema. The Horizon Award recognizes an emerging creative force whose rapid ascent in the entertainment industry is making a significant impact on both regional and international culture.

“I am deeply honored to receive a prestigious award named after one of the true legends of cinema from this part of the world,” Sabry said. “My career has been devoted to uplifting women with complex stories and I am thrilled to be sharing this Golden Globes stage with Alia Bhatt, one of the next generation’s brightest and most talented stars. It’s a significant moment for women in our industry and I am so pleased to be part of the Golden Globes’ enduring history.”

Bhatt added, “This is an honor to be recognized by the Golden Globes and I am grateful for the opportunity to speak for a new generation of aspiring performers and women who are making a difference in film and television around the world. At a time when global voices are coming together to tell more inclusive and impactful stories, this recognition feels especially meaningful. The Golden Globes are an iconic part of the global awards universe and I am delighted to be part of it and look forward to continuing my career in telling more stories of powerful and deserving women.”

Her work has received multiple regional honors, including Best Actress awards at major Arab film festivals, and she has consistently been recognized for redefining the representation of Arab women on screen. Beyond acting, Sabry is an outspoken cultural leader and global advocate for Arab storytelling, whose influence extends well beyond cinema.
