20th Century Women, Directed By Mike MillsIn 1979 Santa Barbara, California, three women find their way through a changing world: a single mom (Annette Bening), a budding photographer (Greta Gerwig) and a precocious teen (Elle Fanning). The story cuts close to writer/director Mike Mills: “I make personal movies because I feel like it’s my best chance to make a good movie”, Mills told us. “I can report on something that I have closely observed and I can write and think about people I love deeply.”Deadpool, Directed By Tim MillerA gun-for-hire (Ryan Reynolds) is submitted to an experimental treatment that leaves him both disfigured and incredibly powerful, all the while keeping his acerbic and dark sense of humor. “What we put on the screen is the most authentic version of Deadpool that could ever be presented on screen”, says Reynolds (who also produced the picture). “Eleven years trying to make this movie…it’s been a hell of a journey”.Florence Foster Jenkins, Directed By Stephen FrearsIn 1940s New York, millionaire heiress and music enthusiast Florence Foster Jenkins (Meryl Streep) decides to launch a singing career, even though she has a terrible voice. “It’s based on a real person”, our Cecil B. deMille recipient Meryl Streep told us. “In my mind she was so popular in the day (…) not because she sang badly (…) but because she sang badly with such hope and with so much joy…” Meryl Streep was nominated in the Best Actress in a Motion Picture- Comedy/Musical category alongside Hugh Grant, who plays Florence’s husband (Best Actor in a Motion Picture- Comedy/Musical) and Simon Helberg (Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture) who’s Florence’s long-suffering vocal coach.La La Land, Directed By Damien ChazelleAn aspiring actress (Emma Stone) and a struggling jazz musician (Ryan Gosling) meet and fall in love in Los Angeles, city of stars. “Part of what is wonderful about Los Angeles is that it doesn’t reveal itself to you right away”, writer/director Damien Chazelle told us. “LA was a town born by the movies in many ways. I find it’s really romantic.” La La Land received six additional nominations: Emma Stone (Best Actress in a Motion Picture- Comedy/Musical), Ryan Gosling (Best Actor in a Motion Picture- Comedy/Musical), Best Screenplay and Best Director for Damien Chazelle, Best Original Score for Justin Hurwitz and Best Original Sonf for Hurwitz’s, Benj Pasek’s and Justin Paul’s “City of Stars”.Sing Street, Directed By John CarneyA boy growing up in Dublin in the 1980s decides to form a band to escape loneliness and bullying. “I love John (Carney), he’s the best”, says Adam Levine, who composed the song “Go Now” for the movie. “He didn’t make me feel at least like it was an 80s movie- he made me feel like they were making the movie in the 80s. (…) And there was actually amazing music and a really ground-breaking scene.”
