Red Carpet Roll Out Preview
It’s the traditional kick off for the Golden Globes, when the red carpet is rolled out for the first time at the Beverly Hilton. This year first-time hosts Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh joked as they attempted to kick the heavy carpet amidst a sea of press rolling their cameras for the perfect shot. “I think once we got the choreography down, it was arguably the best red carpet roll out of all time,” quipped Samberg. While the Brooklyn Nine-Nine star and SNL alum has played host on various award shows, Sandra Oh is primarily known for her dramatic roles in Grey’s Anatomy (for which she won a Golden Globe as Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in 2006) and BBC’s Killing Eve (nominated this year for Best Drama Series and Oh for Best Actress in a Drama Series). “I’ve never hosted anything of this caliber,” said Oh. “But I hope I bring something very different to the show.”Samberg praised her considerable acting range saying that makes her the perfect host. “When you watch her on Killing Eve, she is dramatic but also hysterical,” he says. “She is funny and dramatic which is what a good actor is. It will be very easy for her to move into this role.”And what makes them a good team? “We still don’t know – that’s what makes this so exciting,” he says. While not revealing too many of their plans for the night, Oh said they hope to walk the line between newsworthy and entertainment. “Fun does not automatically not equal political,” the actress says, “I think joy can be deeply political. It’s my hope that Andy (and I) bring some joy as this year’s hosts.”The pair were joined at the red carpet photo call by 16-year-old Isan Elba, daughter of Idris Elba and ex-wife Hanne ‘Kim’ Norgaard, who will serve as this year’s Golden Globe Ambassador. The title, which was previously called Miss Golden Globes is traditionally given to the child of a famous celebrity (past holders include Laura Dern, Dakota Johnson, Rumor Willis and Corinne Fox), who are present on the night to help hand out the awards. “It was my dad who told me that I was chosen to be the ambassador this year,” says Elba. “I think I danced around the room for about 20 minutes.”It’s also a big weekend as the confident teenager turns 17 on Friday. “I guess you could call this my big birthday celebration,” she joked. While the honorary lifetime achievement Cecil B. deMille Award will be handed to acting legend Jeff Bridges, for the first time this year the Golden Globes will introduce the Carol Burnett Award to recognize life achievement in television. Burnett, 85, will be the inaugural recipient of the honor named for her. According to HFPA president Meher Tatna, this will undoubtedly be one of the evenings highlights. “She has made such a valuable contribution to television and has entertained us for generations,” said Tatnawho also revealed that the awards will open with star power A Star is Born duo Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper will present the first award. “I’ve asked them to sing, so we can only hope,” smiles Tatna. With a wide diversity of films and television shows nominated this year, including box office hits like Bohemian Rhapsody, Crazy Rich Asians and Black Panther, Tatna believes there will be even more reasons to tune into the Globes. “The public has really supported the movies and made them hits so they will be excited to see their favorites,” she says. And of course on the night the champagne is always flowing and you never know what will happen. Says Tatna: “The Golden Globes are known to be unexpected, fun and quirky.”
