Nominee Profile 2022: Lady Gaga, “House of Gucci”
Some people who dismissed Lady Gaga before as simply a passing trend are eating their words now.
The postmodern diva, Lady Gaga, not only proved to everyone that she can sing and compose but that she can also act. Her debut feature performance as Ally in A Star is Born got the attention of no less than Ridley Scott who immediately cast her in his drama feature, House of Gucci, as Patrizia Reggiani, the former wife of Maurizio Gucci (Adam Driver) who spent 18 years in prison for hiring a hitman to murder her former husband in 1995.
Considered the first millennial superstar, Lady Gaga won her first Golden Globe Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television award in 2016 for American Horror Story: Hotel. She got nominated again in the 2019 Golden Globes for Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama for A Star is Born and won for composing the song, Shallow, for A Star is Born as Best Original Song – Motion Picture.
This year, she earned another Globes nod in the category, Best Performance by an Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama, for House of Gucci.
In the film, Lady Gaga is transformed into Reggiani, who comes from humble beginnings and turns from a fun-loving girl to an ambitious, cunning, and greedy woman when she marries into the Gucci family. That alliance ultimately causes heartaches and betrayals among the family members and the murder of the only heir of the Gucci dynasty.
The biographical crime drama, which is based on the 2001 book The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour, and Greed by Sara Gay Forden, also stars Al Pacino as Aldo Gucci, Jeremy Irons (Rodolfo Gucci), Jared Leto (Paolo Gucci), Jack Huston (Domenico de Sole), Salma Hayek (Pina Auriemma), Vincent Riotta (Fernando Reggiani) and Gaetano Bruno (Franco).
Born Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta on March 28, 1986, in New York to parents of Italian ancestry, Lady Gaga was only three years old when she discovered her love for music. She played the piano, became good at it, and believes it is the thing that she is the greatest at.
Time magazine named Lady Gaga one of the 100 Most Influential People in the World in 2010 and 2019 and placed her on their All-Time 100 Fashion Icons list. In 2012, she founded the Born This Way Foundation, a non-profit organization aiming to empower youth, improve mental health, and prevent bullying.
Bullied and mocked in school for being too provocative or too eccentric, she said that even when she started her singing career, people still wanted to change her.
Lady Gaga recalled in an HFPA interview on September 9, 2018, “This absolutely happened to me. I was suggested to get a nose job before my first music video before my first single ever came out, and I said no. I am proud to be Italian and I love my Italian nose.
“This is how I maintained who I am through my work and throughout my career. I always made sure that it was what I wanted to say and how I wanted to say it.”
Asked what helped her get out of the suffering, she answered that was the nourishment of people around her and paying attention to and validating her feelings.
She explained, “So many people say, you asked for it, you wanted to be a singer, you wanted to be a star, you asked for it. It’s almost like a blaming.”
“It is something deep inside me, like something from God. And so, I think that we should be kinder to people who live in the spotlight and treat them like humans, simply as each other.”
For someone whose achievements include several Guinness World Records in music, six Grammys, three Brit Awards, a Songwriters Hall of Fame award, and is considered one of the best-selling music artists in history, Lady Gaga stressed that she has just begun, especially as an actress.
“It has always been my dream to be a lead actress in a film since I was a little girl,” she said.
“What I did not expect was for this to feel brand-new again. I thought I would never have the feeling again like I did the first time that I put out music and I had a hit record.”
