She is clever, slightly mean-spirited, and certainly capable of causing messes and creating mayhem. Wednesday Addams is a loner at her new high school, hell-bent on making the best – or naughtiest – of her worst situation.
Wednesday follows the daughter of Morticia and Gomez – played by Golden Globe winner Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzman – to Nevermore Academy, a boarding school for strangely gifted and very difficult students. That’s where her parents dropped her off. Against her will.
Wednesday discovers her psychic abilities but is not adept at harnessing them quite yet. In addition, she is desperate to solve the mystery around her parents that happened 25 years earlier. With her supernatural powers developing, she thwarts a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town. Navigating the newly developing friendships and animosities between her and her fellow students proves a lot harder in comparison.
Jenna Ortega is a discovery in the title role. The 20-year-old, known for her work with Disney and for playing the younger version of Golden Globe winner Gina Rodriguez in Jane the Virgin. She was born and raised in the Coachella Valley, California, and began acting at nine years old in local stage productions. This Golden Globe nomination is her first. She is this year’s youngest nominee.
Gwendoline Christie plays the school principal. Hunter Doohan, whom we may recognize as the judge’s son in the TV series Your Honor, is Wednesday’s only friend, Tyler. Another famous face is Golden Globe nominee Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday in the film The Addams Family and in its sequel, Addams Family Values. This time, Ricci appears as a bespectacled teacher.
The delightfully creepy and kooky series was created by Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Golden Globe winner Tim Burton is producing. He also directed four episodes. Wednesday is nominated in two Golden Globes categories – Best Actress in a TV Series Comedy, and Best TV Series Comedy.
