Godzilla is the rare foreign import to achieve global movie-monster fame including numerous Hollywood reworkings. The latest iteration arrives courtesy of Warner Brothers and Gareth Edwards, the young British director who showed his sci-fi chops in Monsters, an auspicious no-budget debut about, you guessed it, monstrous creatures. His version of the Japanese “kaiju” classic features a top shelf cast who collectively have amassed 13 Golden Globe nominations and 3 wins: Bryan Cranston, Juliette Binoche, Sally Hawkins, Ken Watanabe, David Strathairn, Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson. The film distances itself from previous Godzillas, including the 1998 Roland Emmerich version and JJ Abrams’ and Matt Reeves’ “unofficial” tribute Cloverfield (2008). Instead Edwards opts for an unconventional approach that blends a “high concept,” character driven script with enough nods to B-movie camp to satisfy the fan boys. We caught up with Elizabeth Olsen and Taylor-Johnson and asked them about the film.
