Directed by horror specialist Scott Derrickson (Sinister, Deliver Us from Evil) Dr. Strange is the fourteenth and latest addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. It revolves around the feats of esteemed neurosurgeon and scientific skeptic Stephen Strange (Golden Globe nominee Benedict Cumberbatch) and his quest to acquire special powers through spiritual enlightenment, after he loses the use of his hands. Overcoming his initial resistance, he learns new wisdom from the Ancient One (Golden Globe nominee Tilda Swinton) learning to operate – and fight evil – in different dimensions and the astral plane. That means going head to head with renegade Mystic Master Kaecilius, played by Mads Mikkelsen (star of the Golden Globe nominated The Hunt). The HFPA’s Tina Jøhnk Christensen spoke to the fellow Dane about the essentials of creating a movie villain and the experience of working on a Marvel blockbuster.
