The 76th annual Cannes film festival hinted at trends on its glamorous opening night. Elle Fanning showcased a silver and nude gown by Alexander McQueen with a skirt that could have come from The Great in its volume. Jewels, trains and lush fabrics made the event captivating.

The crowd erupted when Johnny Depp stepped out of his car. His hair was pulled back in a ponytail and he wore sunglasses, earrings and multiple rings, on par with his unique style. He was crushed by the crowd of well wishers at the “Jeanne du Barry” Screening & opening ceremony red carpet at the 76th annual Cannes film festival at Palais des Festivals on May 16, 2023 in Cannes, France. 

There had been a question reported in the press as to whether Brie Larson would turn up. She did in an elaborate golden gown.

Helen Mirren stole the spotlight with blue hair, a flourish and a fan.

Uma Thurman wore a stunning red cape by Dior, copper-gold gown and rubies and diamonds by Chopard.

Alejandro Nones showed men how to wear a tuxedo.

Earlier in the day Jury members Rungano Nyoni, Julia Ducournau, Jury President Ruben Östlund, and jury members Brie Larson and Maryam Touzani raised the expectation of understated elegance at the jury photocall.

Brie Larson, who can currently be seen in Fast X wore a flowered two-piece suit and a headband, a la Hillary Clinton. Maryam Touzani added a bit of edge with a cropped leather jacket. Rungano Nyoni was cool in white, while Julia Ducournau looked like the one to watch with her midriff baring chic ensemble of white shirt, cream pleated skirt and black belt with a long tail tied back on itself. The gold purse and platform shoes hinted at fashion savvy in unexpected pairings. We can’t wait to see what the week brings forth.
