World Box Office, February 1- Feb 7
It was a good weekend to be a bear – in the movies, at least. Stateside, three new releases – the Coen Brothers’ Hail, Caesar!; the genre mashup Pride and Prejudice and ZombiesThe Choice dared challenge the Super Bowl weekend and were mercilessly beaten by DreamWorks’ Kung Fu Panda 3, a holdover from last week, which added another $21 million to $69 million amassed since its debut on January 29. By contrast, the Coens’ classic Hollywood satire landed in second place with $11.4 million – a better performance than Zombies (a half-dead $5.2 million) and Choice (a disheartening $6.1 million).
Overseas, Alejandro Gonzalez Iñarritu’s Golden Globe winner The Revenant – starring Golden Globe winner Leonardo Di Caprio, plus Tom Hardy, Domhall Gleason and, of course, that bear – took the number one spot with $24 million from 67 markets. Worldwide, Revenant passed the $300 million mark with a $326 million cume, with some key markets (France, India and Japan) still to come. Domestically, Revenant placed number 3 with $7.1 million and a cume of $149.7 M.
Kung Fu Panda 3 stayed in second internationally with $23 million, with China leading the way with a $100 million cume in its second frame to a $198.1 million cume worldwide. Overall, however, Panda had a nearly 70% decline overseas, with no new territories coming into play this week. Things are likely to change soon, when the DreamWorks animated feature opens in most foreign markets.
Three other movies had worldwide milestones this week: Star Wars: The ForceAwakens sailed past the $2 billion mark with a total of $2,008,361, becoming the third title to do so (after Titanic and AvatarThe Martian also scored a new benchmark, opening in the number 1 spot in Japan – a feat that pushed its total to $604 M, $377 M of which came from overseas markets; and Ride Along 2 zoomed past $100 M worldwide in its third week in play.
A couple of local films scored big this week. South Korea’s A Violent Prosecutor had the third biggest box office worldwide, with $19.5 million from its debut in one single market – South Korea. The French comedy Les Tuche 2 – Le rêve americain did the same, grabbing the number 10 spot worldwide with a $8.5 M from its release in France alone.
Next week will bring a Valentine’s Day weekend to North America, with the mandatory rom-com – How to Be Single, starring Dakota Johnson, Rebel Wilson and Damon Wayans Jr. – and quite a few options in counter programming, from the highly anticipated anti-superhero adventure Deadpool to Ben Stiller’s Zoolander 2 and Michael Moore’s Where to Invade Next. Meanwhile, Golden Globe nominees and award season front liners The Revenant, The Big Short and Spotlight will continue their international expansion. And, of course, that Kung Fu Panda. Never underestimate the Panda.
