On Music: Jessica Chastain, Singing on the Set
Golden Globe winner Jessica Chastain is back with another powerful performance in Molly’s Game written by another Golden Globe winner, Aaron Sorkin, who decided to debut also as a director. California-born Jessica loves to play the ukulele so we asked if music helps her also in getting into the character she plays.
“I always listen to music when I’m working on characters and what maybe that character would be thinking of. Actually, on this one, (Molly’s Game) it’s interesting because this is the first time music was different. I wonder if it’s because I was doing Aaron Sorkin dialogue, which is so musical, that a lot of the time I was singing musicals with Aaron. So we’d be on set and someone would say, ‘Ok we’re going to turn around’, and this is not a musical, but the camera’s going to turn around and Aaron and I would go, ‘Turn around’ (singing). And every single day it was like a game we would play, someone would say a line from a song; we would just break into some song and dance number that would go on and on and on and on. (Laughs) And I’m hoping in the future he and I can work on something musical together because Aaron has his degree in musical theater, which most people don’t know.”
