World Box Office March 19 – 25, 2018
With $28 million, the domestic debut of Pacific Rim Uprising was not a spectacular one. It actually ended up $10 million below Guillermo del Toro’s 2013 original. But the new version, helmed by Steven S. DeKnight and starring John Boyega and Scott Eastwood, produced enough revenue to unseat Black Panther, that after six weeks at the top got $16.7 million.
Overseas it was a different story, meaning that Pacific Rim, with a reported budget of $150 million, produced solid results. It opened with $122.5 million out of 61 countries, more than half of it from China where the reviews were mixed – and next week Pacific Rim will face the competition of Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One in China. Korea was second with $6.9 million followed by Russia ($6.8 million), Mexico ($4.9 million) and Malaysia ($3.8 million).
Second in the worldwide score was Roar Uthaug’s Tomb Raider, starring Alicia Vikander. It took $34.1 million out of 66 markets. The US was good for an extra $10 million, which brings the worldwide gross to $211.7 million. In its second outing, China was good for $11.6 million and for a cumulative of $69.4 million. It was followed by the UK ($7.6 million), France ($6.6 million), Russia ($6.5 million) and Indonesia ($4.9 million), a country that along with Malaysia is suddenly and often showing up at the top of the international charts.
Sony’s Peter Rabbit was third, adding $28 million out of 39 markets for an international total of $76 million. The last two weeks produced $20 million in the UK alone, where this weekend it managed to double the combined total of newcomers Pacific Rim: Uprising and A Wrinkle in Time.
Black Panther was dethroned in the US but is slowly leaving the scene with plenty of pride. 57 territories were good for an extra $13 million, for a total of $606 million. It crossed the $100 million mark in China, the UK was good for $62.7 million, Korea is third with $42 million. In South Africa, Ryan Coogler’s film has been No. 1 for six weeks in a row.
The Shape of Water keeps proving that an Oscar win still means millions of dollars, after all. Its total overseas gross stands at $122 million, with 15 from China followed by France, Spain and Italy – all around the $10 million figure.
Back on the US, the big winner at the specialty box office is Isle of Dogs, Wes Anderson’s second stop-motion animated feature: 27 theaters in six North American cities were good for a remarkable $1.57 million, for a screen average of $58,148. Under the false pretense of “dog flu” and “canine saturation”, all dogs in the fictional Japanese city of Megasaki have been deported to Trash Island, where they manage to keep their spirit – and, eventually, they rebel. The voice cast is a testimonial to Wes Anderson’s status: among others, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Frances McDormand, Greta Gerwig, Tilda Swinton, Jeff Goldblum, Harvey Keitel, Bill Murray, Scarlett Johansson, Liev Schreiber and Yoko Ono.
Next week will bring us Steven Spielberg’s Ready Player One, out day-and-date pretty much everywhere, China included.
