The Croods: A New Age did its best to animate the pandemic box office doldrums with an estimated $9.71 million earnings from Friday to Friday, the estimated $14.22 million haul during the long Thanksgiving weekend was paltry compared to pre-pandemic Thanksgiving movie grosses.

The Croods sequel beat Tenet’s $9.35 million to take the crown as the biggest three-day opening since COVID-19 closed many North American cinemas in March.

Ryan Reynolds, Emma Stone, Nicolas Cage, Peter Dinklage and Kelly Marie Tran took in an estimated $20.8 million, with $19.2 million coming from China. The Croods 2 scored the third-highest debut by an American film in China, after Tenet and Mulan, since movie houses opened their doors again there.

Just in time for the much-awaited release of Gal Gadot’s epic, for instance, is the reopening of cinemas in France on December 15. Wonder Woman 1984 will bow in French cinemas on December 16, a day after France’s movie houses open after a month of pandemic lockdown.

Wonder Woman will also open on December 16 in many other countries in Europe, South America and Asia. The ninth installment in the DC Extended Universe will launch on December 18, 23 and 24 in other international markets.

Kristen Wiig and Pedro Pascal will be simultaneously launched in theaters as well as streamed by HBO Max at no additional cost to its subscribers. The cross-platform release of a tentpole movie will be closely watched by Hollywood executives who have been dealing with the pandemic impact on the film industry.

Freaky, which took in an estimated $770,000. The Vince Vaughn movie has so far earned $7.02 million in North America. The global market again proved to be a bright spot with a larger haul for the movie – $11.89 million.

Robert De Niro’s The War with Grandpa came third with an estimated weekend take of $644,000 and a five-day haul of $892,000.

Let Him Go, the Kevin Costner–Diane Lane crime-drama thriller, and Come Play, director Jacob Chase’s horror flick, with three-day totals of $453,000 and $387,000, respectively.
