Tribeca Film Festival Opens with JLo’s “Halftime”

Jennifer Lopez’s documentary, Halftime, opened the 2022 Tribeca Film Festival at the United Palace in Washington Heights. Lopez sizzled in a black velvet gown with sheer cutouts by Tom Ford, in the film’s world premiere.

Directed by Amanda Micheli, Halftime follows the singer-actress as she reflects on the ups and downs of her career, the challenges as well as her disappointments, her dreams and aspirations as a working Latina and a female artist in Hollywood.

The documentary, which will make its Netflix debut on June 14, also focuses on her preparation and performance in the Super Bowl LIV Halftime show which was well-received, her activism, as well as her struggles in her decades-long career as an entertainer.

The documentary gives an intimate peek at the international star’s grit and determination that make her who she is today, up to President Joseph Biden’s inauguration. It serves as the kickoff to the second half of Lopez’s life as she bares her evolution as an artist, a mother, and a Latina.

The film also features the 2020 Golden Globe nominations announcement when Lopez earned a nod for Best Supporting Actress for her role as Ramona, a stripper in the movie Hustlers. Halftime shows her emotional reaction to the nomination, getting ready to be at the show and red-carpet appearance, attendance, and post-awards reaction.

The premiere was also graced by Tribeca co-founder Robert De Niro, Tribeca Enterprises CEO and festival co-founder Jane Rosenthal, and Halftime director and Tribeca Festival alum Amanda Micheli.

They were joined by other celebrities, including Lin-Manuel Miranda, Hoda Kotb, Ryan Seacrest, French Montana, Lorraine Schwartz, Paula Weinstein, Tommy Mottola, Tayshia Adams, Stacy London, Rosanna Arquette, and more.

The guests were treated to a surprise flash mob performance of Lopez’s hit, “Let’s Get Loud.”

The premiere location was significant since it is close to where Jenny from the Bronx, now 52, was born and raised.

Produced by Benny Medina, Elaine Goldsmith-Thomas, Dave Broome, Angus Wall, Terry Leonard, Jennifer Sofio Hall, Kent Kuben, and Serin Marshall, the documentary kicked off the 12-day festival which is being held from June 8-19 this year.

The festival, which was founded in 2002 by De Niro, Rosenthal, and Craig Hatkoff, brings artists and diverse audiences together to celebrate storytelling in all its forms, including film, TV, VR, gaming, music, and online.

With strong roots in independent film, Tribeca is a platform for creative expression and immersive entertainment. The festival champions emerging and established voices; discovers award-winning filmmakers and creators; curates innovative experiences; and introduces new technology and ideas through premieres, exhibitions, talks, and live performances.

Tribeca takes place throughout New York City at some of the world’s most iconic venues, including the Beacon Theater, the United Palace, Pier 57, Spring Studios, BMCC Tribeca Performing Arts Center, SVA Theatre, Village East by Angelika, Cinepolis Chelsea, Waterfront Plaza at Brookfield Place, and Battery Park City.
