World Box Office, June 6 to 12, 2022
The dinosaurs, especially the Giganotosaurus, stomped the box office. Proving that the franchise is not at all extinct, Jurassic World Dominion made a gigantic North American debut with $143.3 million.
The sixth installment in Universal’s Jurassic Park series, starring the beloved original trio – Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill – roared past Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick to become the domestic box office king.
The final movie in the Jurassic World trilogy, directed by Colin Trevorrow, also stars Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, BD Wong, DeWanda Wise, and Mamoudou Athie.
The dinos grabbed all the IMAX theaters from Capt. Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and his fellow fighter jet pilots but Top Gun: Maverick still flew high even though it dipped to the second spot. On its third weekend, the critically lauded sequel co-starring Jennifer Connelly, Miles Teller, and Glen Powell drew a hefty $50 million.
Top Gun: Maverick is still flying high even in the face of stiff competition from Jurassic World Dominion,” reported Paul Dergarabedian, Comscore’s senior analyst, to the media. “For movie theaters, this is a dream scenario of having two blockbusters on their screens at once generating excitement and buzz surrounding the movie theater experience.”
With its $393.3 million ticket sales so far in the United States and Canada, Maverick will soon eclipse the domestic earnings ($398 million) of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.
Speaking of Benedict Cumberbatch’s Marvel Comics superhero movie, the Sam Raimi-directed sequel claimed third place. The 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, also top-billed by Elisabeth Olsen, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Rachel McAdams, and Benedict Wong, collected $4.8 million.
In fourth, fifth, and sixth spots, respectively, were The Bob’s Burgers Movie ($2.33 million), The Bad Guys ($2.25 million), and Downton Abbey: A New Era ($1.65 million).
Michelle Yeoh and Jamie Lee Curtis’ Everything Everywhere All at Once is still very much around at number seven with $1.2 million ticket receipts. In a heartening development for an indie film, the other multiverse film directed by the duo known as the “Daniels” – Dan Kwan and Daniel Scheinert – has managed to cling on to the top ten after 12 weeks.
Comprising the rest of the domestic box office top eleven were, in order: Firestarter, $820,000; Sonic the Hedgehog 2, $710,000; The Lost City, $655,000; and Ante Sundaraniki, another Indian Telugu language romantic comedy that broke into the magic eleven on its bow, $620,000.
Overseas, the mighty Tyrannosaurus Rex and the other dinos continued their dominance. Jurassic World Dominion scared up $176.6 million in more than 50 territories. That increased the action/adventure/sci-fi’s totals to $245.8 million (offshore) and $389.1 million (worldwide).
Jurassic World Dominion is the rare major Hollywood studio production that snagged a release date in China. Bowing on top in the world’s largest movie market, JWD picked up $52.5 million. That’s the biggest Hollywood movie opening in that country so far in 2022.
The movie also performed especially strong in the United Kingdom, South Korea, and Mexico.
But Maverick, even without the benefit of a China release, has chalked up impressive earnings internationally ($353.7 million) and globally ($747 million). Ticket sales in Australia, France, Japan, and the United Kingdom are helping drive up Maverick’s overseas numbers.
