Spielberg, Zemeckis, Haynes Lined Up for New York Festival

Steven Spielberg’s Bridge of Spies will début at the 53rd New York Film Festival. The
Cold War spy drama, written by the Coen Brothers and starring Tom Hanks and Amy Ryan is part of a substantial line-up of world premieres that also includes Robert Zemeckis’ The Walk, with Joseph Gordon-Levitt as daredevil Philippe Petit of walk-between-the-Twin-Towers fame; the Miles Davis biopic Miles Ahead, directed by and starring Don Cheadle as the jazz giant; and Laura Israel’s documentary Don’t Blink, about photographer
Robert Frank.
A batch of Cannes-acclaimed films will also be shown at NYFF: Todd Haynes’ Carol, starring Golden Globe winner Cate Blanchett and Cannes Best Actress Rooney Mara; Stéphane Brizé’s The Measure of a Man, starring Cannes Best Actor Vincent Lindon; Yorgos Lanthimos’ Jury Prize winner The Lobster, with Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Léa Seydoux; Cannes Best Director Hou Hsiao-hsien’s The AssassinJourney to the ShoreThe Treasure.
Other high profile offerings include Danny Boyle’s Steve Jobs, with Michael Fassbender as the iconic digital pioneer; John Crowley’s Brooklyn, starring Saoirse Ronan as an Irish immigrant in 1950s New York; Michael Moore’s newest documentary, Where to Invade Next, about the U.S.’ penchant for what Moore calls “infinite war”; Rebecca Miller’s Maggie’s Plan starring Ethan Hawke and three-time Golden Globe winner Julianne Moore; Apichatpong Weerasethakul’s new film Cemetery of Splendour, making its U.S. premiere; Nanni Moretti’s Mia Madre, with John Turturro and Margherita Buy, another U.S. premiere; and Michel Gondry’s whimsical Microbe and Gasoline, with its handmade special effects, being shown for the first time in the U.S.
Produced and curated by the Film Society of Lincoln Center, the New York Film Festival will run from September 25 to October 11. Like its Fall counterparts Venice, Telluride and Toronto, New York is a key showcase of potential awards-worthy films.
