Barbra Streisand to Receive Jewish Nobel Prize

Trailblazing artist, director, producer, and activist Barbra Streisand has been named the 2023 Genesis Prize Laureate, dubbed by TIME Magazine as the ‘Jewish Nobel’. It is awarded annually by The Genesis Prize Foundation (GPF), in partnership with Israel’s Prime Minister’s Office and the Jewish Agency for Israel.

Marking its tenth anniversary, the $1 million prize honors extraordinary individuals for outstanding professional achievements, contributions to humanity, and commitment to Jewish values. Past winners include Michael Douglas, Natalie Portman, and Steven Spielberg.

According to the foundation, Streisand received tens of thousands of nominations and votes for the Genesis Prize. “Recognizing the overwhelming display of support and admiration by global Jewry over the past decade, the judges of the Selection and Prize Committees unanimously endorsed Ms. Streisand as the 10th Anniversary Genesis Prize Laureate,” per the official announcement.

“I am delighted to be honored by the special 10th Anniversary Genesis Prize and to work with The Genesis Prize Foundation to support organizations that seek to better society and our shared humanity,” said Streisand in her official statement, “I am very proud of my Jewish heritage, and have always been moved by the Jewish tradition of ‘tikkun olam’, to repair the world. I hope to join and inspire others in their own commitment to build a better world.”

Following the tradition set by inaugural Genesis Prize Laureate, businessman and former mayor of New York City Michael Bloomberg, Streisand has requested that The Genesis Prize Foundation direct her prize funds to nonprofit organizations working in four areas: protecting the environment, promoting women’s health, combating disinformation in the media, and aiding the people of Ukraine.

The prize will be added to the EGOT winner’s already impressive tally, which includes two Academy Awards, five Emmys, eight Golden Globes and the 1999 honorary Cecil B. deMille Award, nine Grammys, as well as the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award and the Grammy Legend Award, a Tony and the Presidential Medal of Freedom.

While the majority of Genesis Award ceremonies were held in Israel, this year Streisand will be honored at a special ceremony in Los Angeles in October 2023.
