We mourn the passing of Golden Globe winner (and three-time nominee) Bob Hoskins. The beloved British actor passed away at the age of 71. Hoskins who as a youth had been a porter at London’s Covent Garden, told the HFPA in 1986 that he fell into acting after being mistakenly cast in a play while drinking at a pub. In his award-winning career he perfected the gruff cockney character with a good heart, becoming world famous as a cabbie who falls in love with a call girl in Neil Jordan’s Mona Lisa, a role that won him the Golden Globe for best Dramatic Actor in 1987. He followed that up with Who Framed Roger Rabbit (1989) playing a hard-boiled gumshoe investigating shady dealings in Toontown. His role in that Robert Zemeckis’ milestone animated hybrid earned him a second Golden Globe nomination and worldwide acclaim. His other credits included work on the seminal Dennis Potter TV series Pennies From Heaven, The Long Good Friday, Francis Ford Coppola’s The Cotton Club, Terry Gilliam’s Brazil and Stephen Frears’ Mrs. Henderson Presents alongside Judi Dench for which he was again nominated for a Globe. We last saw him in The Huntsman in 2012. He will be missed.
