Kristen Stewart, Kate Beckinsale, Mila Kunis, and Miley Cyrus are only a few of the big names she has dressed for the red carpet. What can we expect for the Golden Globes?
Definitely a high level of sophistication. Women are looking towards the new modern, more edgy red carpet looks. You always see throwbacks to that old Hollywood glamour, that never seems to go away, but I do think women are having more fun now. I think you will see women who are taking a few more risks with some bold statement pieces. Any colors or fabrics that come to mind? You are always going to have a classic shimmery metallic. Beautiful embroidery and appliqués will be prominent. It’s a way to make these dresses a bit more special without going too far. I also expect really bold colors such as bright red, some beautiful purple and some great blues. Women are also coming to the point on the red carpet where they are really willing to show off their bodies. You will see a lot of great drapes, crepes, and beautiful body-hugging silks. There will be some ball gowns with tulle, that Cinderella style, but I think women are tending more towards form-fitting dresses this year. How about accessories? Are there any must-haves? I think diamonds are still a girl’s best friend. Women also have been taking more risks here. You will see a lot of bold statement pieces, some great necklaces, stacking of tons of beautiful bangles and bracelets, amazingly large cocktail rings. At the end, of course it all depends on the dress. If a dress has a lot of detail, most women will stay simpler with their jewelry. For me personally, less is more. Do you have a favorite look on the red carpet? I tend to like very classic shapes. Women look great in the A-Line strapless gowns, I love the mermaid silhouette, which is always so flattering on women. I love the one-shoulder style and dresses that are draped off the shoulder. The one thing I really love right now is sleeves. You haven’t seen that much on the red carpet and I think women are bringing that back this year. What is a fashion faux pas on the red carpet? I wouldn’t wear black. I like it when women wear colors. Black is very classy but for me, as a fashionista, I prefer colors. It’s so much fun to play with colors. I will warn my clients if a dress is way too sexy or way to fashion forward. It may be too risky. There is a line between being a showstopper and going over the edge. Head to toe feathers for example should stay on the runway instead of on the red carpet. Ultimately though it all depends on the person. If someone is known for being very fashion-forward or can pull it off, then they should go for it. Who are you dressing this year at the Golden Globes? I am dressing Julie Bowen who is a presenter. She is from the TV show “Modern Family” which is nominated. I also have Kaley Cuoco who is a presenter as well. She is from the TV Show “The Big Bang Theory.” When and how do you start picking their gowns? I already started before the holidays, testing different silhouettes and shapes on them, so that I get an idea of what looks good and what they like. Generally I do two fittings. The first fitting, I try to get in as many gowns as possible. Of course the difficulty with award season is, is that everyone is after the same looks and designers. There needs to be a lot of planning what has to come in and at what time. Designers are shuffling their dresses from stylist to stylist to ensure that they can get to as many fittings as possible. So we do our first fitting where we hopefully choose the dress. 99% of the time we do. At the second fitting we do the final fit, the accessorizing, bags, shoes, and jewelry. Are there a lot of last-minute changes? Most actresses fall in love with one dress. In rare circumstances, we change dresses at the second fitting. Let’s say one dress was not available at the first fitting but has become available at the second, I will show it to my client. If she falls in love with that one, we will go with it. It depends. What happens on the day of the show? I help them get into the dress, check the fit one last time. And of course we work with the hair and make-up team so that everything coordinates perfectly. And then we are out the door. Do you think women dress differently at the Golden Globes? I think so. The Golden Globes are all about having fun with their peers. TV and film comes together and everybody is there to have a great time. Having said that, the event is very dressy and you will always see some amazing gowns. Do you have any advice for women who would love to emulate the red carpet look on a limited budget? The beauty of the timing of the award season is that you are coming up on the year-end sales. A lot of gowns are half-off and at least are little bit more achievable within budgetary means. You can find some amazing deals. There are also lots of brands that are doing amazing knock-offs and are attainable for woman: I always love BCBG and Max Azria for example. The most important thing is knowing your body shape and then going out to find the best dress for that. There are a lot more affordable dresses out there than the crazy designer gowns. Do you have a favorite designer? I have 10 designers that I always go to. I love Valentino, J. Mendel, Donna Karen, Oscar de la Renta. They do evening wear extremely well. I also love finding new designers, Oday Shakar for example. He is a newcomer to the red carpet and I love seeing those gowns along the big hitters you always see. Who do you think will look amazing this year? I look forward to seeing everyone, honestly.
