French Box Office, September 30th, 2022

This week, the French box office ranking is completely turned upside down since half of the movies have disappeared to make way for new ones.

Well, “new” ones maybe not be that much considering that Avatar is number 1! The Avatar re-release, directed by James Cameron with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, and Sigourney Weaver, shows the franchise’s overseas strength. In France, the movie grossed $1,946,323 for the first week.

Driving Madeleine is coming on the French box office directly at 2nd place. Directed by Christian Carion with Line Renaud, Dany Boon, and Alice Isaaz, this French movie is about an old lady ready to go to live in a nursing home on the other side of Paris. When a taxi driver is coming to pick her up, she asks him to go through places of the capital, which have counted in her life. The movie grossed $990,151.

Don’t Worry Darling opened in 3rd place. Directed by Olivia Wilde with Florence Pugh, Harry Styles, Chris Pine, and Olivia Wilde, the movie is the chronicle of an isolated community in the California desert in the heart of the 1950s, in which a housewife finds her life turned upside down. The movie grossed $855,969.

Other People’s Children premiered in number 4. Directed by Rebecca Zlotowski with Virginie Efira, Roschdy Zem, and Chiara Mastroianni, the movie is about a childless woman who forms a deep bond with her boyfriend’s young daughter. The film grossed $761,409. 

After being number 1, Kompromat is now in 5th place. Directed by Jérôme Salle with Gilles Lellouche, Joanna Kulig, and Louis-Do de Lencquesaing, the movie is about a French diplomat victim of a “Kompromat” – forged compromising documents used by the Russian secret services to harm an enemy of the state. Threatened with a life sentence, his only option is to escape. The movie grossed $711,128 reaching a total of $3,081,229.

The movie Paris Memories lost 3 spots and is now number 6. Directed by Alice Winocour with Virginie Efira, Benoît Magimel, and Grégoire Colin, this movie is about a woman who survived a terrorist attack in Paris but is still so traumatized that she is unable to recall the events of that night. The movie grossed $621,571 reaching a total of $2,409,123.

From being at 2nd place, Diary of a Fleeting Affair is now number 7. Directed by Emmanuel Mouret with Sandrine Kiberlain, Vincent Macaigne, and Georgia Scalliet, the movie is about a single mother and a married man who become lovers. Committed to seeing each other only for fun and not feeling any romantic feelings, they are more and more surprised by their complicity. The movie grossed $445,680 reaching a total of $1,279,538.  

The Visitor from the Future lost four spots and is now in 8th place. This science-fiction comedy is directed by François Descraques with Florent Dorin, Arnaud Ducret, and Enya Baroux. The movie takes place in 2555 in a devastated future and the apocalypse threatens the Earth. The last hope rests on a man who can travel through time. The movie grossed $347,396 and got a total of $1,946,816.

Tad the Lost Explorer and The Curse of the Mummy is back in the top 10, taking number 9. Directed by Enrique Gato, the animated movie is about Tad Stones’ dream to be recognized as a great archaeologist. Unfortunately, by opening a sarcophagus, he triggers a curse that will put the lives of his friends in danger. To end this curse and save the Mummy, Jeff, Bernardo, Tad and Sara embark on new adventures all over the world. The movie grossed $286,394 getting a total of $3,022,079.         

The animated movie Koati opened in 10th place. Directed by Rodrigo Perez-Castro with the voice of Sofia Vergara, Adriana Barraza, and Joe Manganiello, this animated movie is about a free-spirited coati, a fearless monarch butterfly, and a hyperactive glass frog who are fighting against a coral snake who is destroying their rain forest homeland. The movie grossed $283,892.
