German-Speaking Box Office, April 25, 2022

Sandra Bullock and Channing Tatum may be a formidable pair, but they are apparently no match for the magical beasts, dreamed up by J.K. Rowling. Premieres of The Lost City and The Northman both broke into the top ten but failed to take the top spot.

The Lost City debuted at number two. Sonic the Hedgehog 2 slipped to third place.

Phantastische Tierwesen 3: Dumbledores Geheimnisse (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore) remained the uncontested number one of Germany’s top ten. The irony here is that The Lost City also stars Daniel Radcliffe, whom everyone the world over remembers as the title character and protagonist of Rowlings’ first franchise, the Harry Potter films, of course. In the adventure film, he plays an eccentric billionaire who abducts the Bullock character during her book tour. Sandra Bullock is the brilliant but publicity-shy bestselling author Loretta Sage who has spent her career writing adventurous love stories set in exotic locations. Her books are popular not just because of the content but also due to the sex appeal of her cover model Alan (Channing Tatum) who has been confusing his alter ego Dash with his real life. When Loretta gets kidnap because the billionaire wants her to take him to the supposed treasure in the antique, mythical city in her last novel, Alan comes to the rescue. Or tries to. His heroic attempts get the pair into even deeper trouble as fact and fiction get blurred. Brad Pitt appears in what is probably the funniest cameo of his career, the billionaire’s crazy meditation guru.

The Northman, a dark Viking epic directed by Robert Eggers (The Witch) and starring Nicole Kidman, Alexander Skarsgård, Ethan Hawkeand Anya Taylor-Joy made its start in number four. The revenge saga – Viking prince Amleth, a wordplay on Shakespeare’s Hamlet, goes after his uncle who killed his dad (Hawke) and imprisoned his mum – reunites Skarsgård and Kidman, the troubled couple from Big Little Lies, but this time she plays his mother! The script is written by Sjón Sigurdsson who penned the critically acclaimed Lamb. The film was shot in Iceland and Ireland.

German film Eingeschlossene Gesellschaft stayed in fifth place, followed by The Batman and Morbius. Die Häschenschule – Jagd nach dem Goldenen Ei and Die Gangster Gang switched places this week, with Uncharted in tenth place.

In Austria, the first three slots are the same as in their neighboring country. Die Häschenschule – Der Grosse Eierklau only fell one spot to number four and the homemade Austrian biopic Rotzbub – Willkommen in Siegheilkirchen came in at number five. Geschichten vom Franz debuted in number five last week and stayed firmly in the sixth spot after this weekend. The story of a shy, unpopular boy who discovers a program by an influencer to change from wallflower to cool kid in class resonated with audiences. The film is directed by Johannes Schmid and stars newcomer Jossi Jantschitsch and local acting celebrities Ursula Strauss and Simon Schwarz as his parents and Maria Bill as his unlikeable teacher.

Morbius, Die Gangster Gang, Uncharted, and The Batman took the last four spots in Austria’s Top Ten.
