37 million fans loved the Playstation classic ‘Uncharted’. No surprise then that the live-action film version played its way into the top spot, while Germany’s most successful movie of 2022 so far stuck to number two, and Sing 2 held its notes in third place.

Uncharted is the prequel to the original video game, in which hero Nathan Drake experiences his very first adventure. Drake, an orphan is played by Tom Holland who partners with his unlikely childhood mentor Victor “Sully” Sullivan portrayed by Mark Wahlberg. After discovering the legend of El Dorado, the two set out to find the treasure of the famous explorer Ferdinand Magellan that is supposed to be buried there. No one has seen the treasure in 500 years, but the unscrupulous Spaniard Moncada (Antonio Banderas) considers himself the rightful heir to the fortune since his ancestors were part of accumulating it. The project has languished for 14 years until it finally made it to the screen. It began in 2008 and went through six directors until it landed with Ruben Fleischer (Venom), and this despite the fact that Joe Carnahan’s original script never changed.

Wunderschön, the German dramedy, proved resilient and even surpassed Death on the Nile (in fourth behind Sing 2) this past week, although it had opened earlier. Spider-Man: No Way Home is in fifth place, followed by Moonfall, Marry Me, and The King’s Man, the prequel to the spy series by Matthew Vaughn, starring Ralph Fiennes, Harris Dickinson, and Gemma Arterton.

House of Gucci slipped to the ninth spot, still impressive in its 10th week.

Der Pfad (The Path) is the only other new release that walked into the top ten. The German film about the scary escape of two kids across the Pyrenees is a family adventure by Tobias Wiedemann with Julius Weckauf, Volker Bruch, and Nonna Cardoner. It is a period piece taking place during the Second World War. The Germans have reached France when a Jewish father and son flee the Nazi regime from Paris to Marseille to eventually get to America. But once in Marseille, the situation gets hairy: there is no way out since the German army already controls all the ports, and their only escape is into Spain and Portugal across the treacherous terrain of the mountain range. Their guide? A little Spanish girl with no German language skills at first, not much older than the son. After the father is caught and arrested, the two kids form an unusual friendship on the run. Filmed in original locations in Germany, France, and Spain, Der Pfad is based on a true story that was turned into a novel titled “Der Pfad – Die Geschichte einer Flucht in Die Freiheit” (“The Path – The Story of an Escape to Freedom”) by Rüdiger Bertram who also wrote the first draft of the screenplay.

In Austria, Death on the Nile is the week’s best new start in number two just behind Sing 2 which is still holding on to the top.

Moonfall is in third place with Wunderschön and yes, Spidey – still – rounding out the top five. The remaining films in the top ten are well-established by now: Marry Me, Around the World in 80 Days, House of Gucci, Scream, and Clifford, the Big Red Dog prove staying power but with no surprise new releases making it into the charts this past week.
