A long weekend – Monday was a holiday in some of the German-speaking countries – and beautiful weather contributed to barely any change in the charts.

Top Gun: Maverick ruled the cinematic skies again in its second week. Interesting side effect: Top Gun, the original was the most downloaded and streamed film on home screens. In a survey conducted by some newspapers, young viewers said that they wanted to understand what all the flashbacks in the new film are about. There is a whole sequence to explain Maverick’s difficult relationship with his old partner Goose’s son (Miles Teller – Goose was played by Anthony Edwards) as well as the Val Kilmer character, Iceman. And older theatergoers tried to figure out Maverick’s new relationship with Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly) and their hinted-at past. Except that the character of Penny never appeared in the original. She was only referred to as the admiral’s daughter who the young Maverick had an affair with. Nonetheless, the old and the new Top Gun clearly won on the big and the small screen.

There were zero changes in the number two and three spots.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Fantastische Tierwesen 3: Dumbledores Geheimnisse (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore) stayed where they were. The buddy road movie Dog barked its way up two spots and landed in number four, followed by more animals in Paw Patrol: Jet to the Rescue – Rettung im Anflug, which is a bit surprising since this is not even a feature-length film but a 42-minute special to the beloved series. The cute puppies Skye, Marshall, Rocky, Chase, Rubble, Zuma, Tracker, Everest and Ryder try to find the thief of a magical jewel. The Paw Patrol series spans seven seasons so far and the special was created during the shooting of the last one. The first film was released a year ago.

Mia and Me – Das Geheimnis von Centopia (Mia and Me – The Secret of Centopia), the film based on the animated TV-series slipped into sixth place with the horse adventure film Immenhof – Das Grosse Versprechen (Immenhof – The Big Promise) in seventh. The Lost City – Das Geheimnis der Verlorenen Stadt holds steady in its eighth week in eighth place.

Die Gangster Gang (The Bad Guys), Sonic the Hedgehog 2 and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 round out the top ten.

Austria mirrors Germany except that Die Biene Maja – Das Geheime Königreich (Maja, the Bee – The Golden Orb) flew up to fourth place behind Top Gun: Maverick, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and Dog.  Mia and Me is in fifth and The Lost City – Das Geheimnis der Verlorenen Stadt in sixth place. The horses of Immenhof – Das Grosse Versprechen (Immenhof – The Big Promise) neighed their way up to number seven, while the Austro-German family comedy Geschichten vom Franz held steady in the eighth spot followed by Sonic the Hedgehog 2. Fantastische Tierwesen 3: Dumbledores Geheimnisse (Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore) fell the hardest, barely making it into the top ten.
