German-Speaking Box Office October 2, 2022

Three’s the charm for Ticket to Paradise. No exciting new debut stood a chance in the top ten. And Tom Cruise and the minions refuse to go away.

George Clooney and Julia Roberts certainly prove that they still got it. Ticket ins Paradies (Ticket to Paradise) which has opened everywhere except in the USA so far, is the number one film for the third week in a row all across Europe (in Australia it is at number two). The old-style romcom – director Ole Parker’s biggest hit since Mamma Mia 2 – resonates with audiences who clearly prefer to spend two hours laughing rather than worrying about their circumstances.

This trend also continues with the other two films in the top three that have not changed since last week. Nostalgic Sci-Fi escapism works well for the re-release of Avatar – Aufbruch nach Pandora which stayed in second place, and the over-styled But Don’t Worry Darling, which makes want viewers to chuck just as many cocktails as the film’s good-looking protagonists. The Olivia Wilde-directed film also stayed in its spot at number three.

There was a switch-up over the weekend between number four and five: Minions 2 – Auf der Suche nach dem Mini Boss (Minions 2 – In Search for the Mini Boss) is just not going away and climbed back up and switched places with Gesang der Flusskrebse (Where the Crawdads Sing).

German drama Mittagsstunde (Noon Hour), got such great word-of-mouth that it climbed three spots to number six. The same happened to DC League of Super-Pets which jumped back to seven from last week’s tenth place. Another big jump up is Die Känguru Verschwörung (The Kangaroo Conspiracy) which had already descended way below the single-digit spots before getting back into eighth place, closely followed by Tom Cruise who gave a good chase in Top Gun: Maverick. Orphan: First Kill rounds out the top ten.

The unusually cold and wet weather clearly contributed to a massive overall box office of almost € 8 million.
