- Box Office
German Speaking Box Office, September 4, 2022
As the top one and two spots remained unchanged, a small drama rose up again, and anime film as well as the newest work by a renowned German director made their debut in the top ten.
The young adults kept flocking to After Forever (After Ever Happy), keeping it on top of the charts. That may not be as surprising as the fact that the communist kangaroo story Die Känguru-Verschwörung (The Kangaroo Conspiracy) is hopping close behind in its second week, staying in the number two spot.
Even more astonishing is the fact that in Germany good word-of-mouth is still the best advertisement, beating any insanely expensive marketing campaign by the big studios: only this can be the reason for the little movie that could, Gesang der Flusskrebse (Where the Crawdads Sing), to climb slowly up the charts, not down, and making it into the top three.
At this point, Minions 2 – Auf der Suche nach dem Mini Boss (Minions 2 – In Search for the Mini-Boss) is such a megahit – not just in Germany but worldwide – that no one should be all too sad that it “only“ came in fourth after a whole summer of ruling just about every week. And neither should it be cause for despair that Guglhupfgeschwader landed in fifth place after its already successful four-week run.
Bullet Train and Top Gun: Maverick stayed in the charts, this time in sixth and seventh place, respectively. In the eighth spot, we have the first big debut, Ball Super: Super Hero, the latest installment in the popular animé series, in which Gohan and Piccolo fight against the newest cyborgs of the red ribbon army, exactly four years after the last film, Dragon Ball Super: Broly came out. Years ago, Son Goku (Tommy Morgenstern) managed to eviscerate the red ribbon army, but sympathizers created two more powerful cyborgs, Gamma 1 (Fabian Oscar Wien) and Gamma 2 (Patrick Keller) who act like they are superheroes in public while hiding their sinister agenda. The real heroes, Son Gohan (Robin Kahnmeyer) and Piccolo (Felix Spieß) have to prepare for a new altercation and hope to gain support from other Z-warriors like Vegeta (Oliver Siebeck), Krillin (Wanja Gerick), Son Goten (Marcel Mann), Trunks (Sebastian Kluckert) and Son Gohans little daughter Pan (Shanti Chakraborty), who already shows immense strength at her age. Dragon Ball creator Akira Toriyama is again behind the camera.
Thor 4: Love and Thunder still managed to stay in the ninth spot but rounding out the top ten is the latest film by the renowned Doris Dörrie, one of the most successful German filmmakers and not just among her female peers. Her new project is called Freibad (Public Swimming Pool), a comedy about various women who frequent a female-only public bath. In this place, the only one in the country, women can do whatever they want: go topless, wear a bathing suit, a bikini, or a full-coverage burkini like Yasemin (Nilam Farooq). Yet, that is a thorn in the side of more conservative women like Eva (Andrea Sawatzki) and Gabi (Maria Happel), which puts the nice pool attendant (Melodie Wakivuamina) under immense pressure, especially after a whole group of completely covered friends of Yasemin’s discover the place. Discussions about the ownership of the female body, body images in different cultures, and who is right or wrong ensue and get so contentious that the pool attendant quits, and the job goes to, of all options, to a guy! Dörrie, once again, manages to give a voice to women and does so with biting, yet heartwarming humor.
