Golden Globes’ SXSW London Sessions Explore Changing Landscape
The Golden Globes held three events on the second day of the inaugural SXSW London.
Golden Globes president Helen Hoehne spoke with Onur Güvenatam, founder and executive producer of OGM Pictures (The Gift, Golden Boy), and other panelists at a full-house event that was part of the series titled “Beyond Borders — Creating a Global Presence Amidst a Changing Landscape.”
At the Shoreditch House session, Güvenatam stressed the importance of being able to distribute work globally, stating that it’s a task made easier by the streaming platforms. For him, storytelling in film is all about emotion.
Ukranian cinematographer Diana Olifirova added that a key component to storytelling in film is “to be niche that may resonate with people … as it’s very specific to touch people in different ways.” Olifirova also addressed the use of AI; while stating there’s nothing to be afraid of, she indicated “it’s better to learn it than avoid it.”
Producers Gareth Neame and Nigel Marchant of Carnival Films, of Downton Abbey and Day of the Jackal fame, described to Hoehne that “with globalization, there is so much more access and no limitations culturally, globally and technically as to what stories can be made in the future.” However, while there were many ideas within their team, they stressed that such stories have to fulfill the wants of the companies that provide the funding.
During the Q&A, the panel acknowledged the rise of short-form content such as YouTube and other platforms to address the changes in audience viewing habits.
Preceding the panel session was another part of the “Beyond Borders” series, when Hoehne moderated a one-to-one session with actor Joseph Fiennes. Fiennes looked back on his career milestones and challenges in his roles in the performing arts and film. Above all, he underlined the importance for authenticity.
Following the panel event was a cocktail reception with panelists mingling with SXSW London attendees, including some Golden Globe voters. Also in attendance were cast members from What It Feels Like For a Girl, among others. Guests were offered the choice of three Johnnie Walker Black Label-based cocktails paired with canapés.
Hoehne said the Golden Globes will return to SXSW London for next year’s edition. SXSW London’s inaugural edition arrived from Austin, Texas and has taken over more than 30 venues in London’s Shoreditch area, from 2–7 June 2025. The festival includes a conference focusing on technology, innovation and creative movement. A screen and musical festival are also included, as well as XR and immersive activities.
The Golden Globes, aka “The Biggest Party of the Year,” will air on Sunday January 11 2026 from the Beverly Hilton and will air live on CBS. Dick Clark Productions will plan, host and produce the annual event, which has been viewed in more than 185 countries and territories worldwide.
Paramount+ with SHOWTIME subscribers will have access to stream live via the live feed of their local CBS affiliate on the service, as well as on demand. Paramount+ Essential subscribers will not have the option to stream live but will have access to on-demand the day after the special airs.
