‘Good Hang With Amy Poehler’ Wins the First Golden Globe for Best Podcast
Amy Poehler isn’t just a “Good Hang” – she’s the best one of the year. The “Parks and Recreation” and “Saturday Night Live” star took home the Golden Globe for Best Podcast, inaugurating the awards ceremony’s newest category.
The win represents a crowning moment for “Good Hang With Amy Poehler,” which launched from Paper Kite Productions and The Ringer just 10 months ago – but became an instant sensation with early episodes featuring Poehler’s comedy peers Martin Short, Ike Barinholtz, Quinta Brunson, plus interviews with her “Weekend Update” co-anchor Tina Fey and her “Parks and Recreation” co-star Rashida Jones.
“I just want to say that I know I’m new to this game. I have great respect for this form. I have great respect for all the people that I am nominated with,” Poehler said in her acceptance speech, acknowledging her relatively recent entry into the world of podcasting. Then she cracked a joke about the format having become saturated with film and television stars. “I’m big fans of all of you – except for NPR! Just a bunch of celebs phoning it in. Try harder!”
The speech was a full-circle moment for Poehler at the Globes. Not only had she received three acting nominations for her turns on NBC’s “Parks and Recreation,” but she has been a four-time host for the ceremony, sharing duties with Tina Fey.
“This is an attempt to try to make a very rough and unkind world filled with a little bit more love and laughter, and laughing with people, not at them,” Poehler continued. “We just have such a good time making it. Thank you so much for letting us make more.”
Poehler accepted the Golden Globe from category presenter Snoop Dogg, who noted that he’s thinking about becoming a threat for awards races in the future: “Y’all better hope I never get in the game. Actually I’m in a game: representing podcasts. It is popping right about now.
Golden Globes host Nikki Glaser helped launch the category with a pre-recorded sketch parodying Nicole Kidman’s beloved preroll for AMC Theatres, in which the movie star lauds the “magic” of multiplexes.
“We come here to laugh, to cry. Because we need that – all of us. That indescribable feeling when the episode starts to play,” Glaser says, queuing up some small talk clips from other Best Podcast nominees like “Smartless” and “Call Her Daddy.”
The sketch also saw Glaser fielding ad breaks, including a Tinder promo interrupting “Call Her Daddy” host Alex Cooper’s interview with Jane Goodall and a socks commercial narrated by “Blank Check” host Griffin Newman. Marc Maron, who closed out 16 years of his seminal interview show “WTF” last October, made a jokey cameo at the end to ask Glaser if she’s heard of the perennial podcast ad buyer Square Space.
Along with “Good Hang With Amy Poehler,” the Golden Globe nominees for Best Podcast included “Armchair Expert With Dax Shepard,” “Call Her Daddy,” “Good Hang With Amy Poehler,” “Smartless,” “The Mel Robbins Podcast” and “Up First.” The group was decided from a list of 25 eligible podcasts invited to submit entries, determined by Globes data partner, Luminate.
The newly launched Best Podcast category follows the start of the Globes’ Best Performance in Stand-Up Comedy on Television category, which launched in 2024. Both represent an effort by the Globes to recognize the top of the field in an expanding entertainment industry, where personality-driven productions are now at the center of attention for audiences.
