Italian Box Office, December 6-12, 2021
The holiday season is coming, and Warner Bros and Walt Disney lead the Italian market, with eight titles out of 10 in the weekly top ten of the highest box office takings. The most child-friendly time of the year brings another surprise: the return of a super-classic, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, back in theaters to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first film in the series based on the best-sellers by J.K. Rowling. Out on December 8, the wizard has cast a spell on Italians and took home almost 2 million euros in four days, notably 1,870,942 from the first day of programming to Sunday 12, and earned first place on the podium.
But let’s move on to the rest of the top ten for the week of December 6-12. In second place is Encanto, down one position, the animated film by Disney, which transports viewers to the most remote forests of Colombia. Last week, the film totaled another 946,987 euros, reaching a total of 4,039,930 euros. In third place on the podium is a new entry, Mollo tutto e apro un chiringuito, a Medusa Film production, which brings Italian productions back in the charts with a first-week total of 522,501 euros. The first long feature of the successful youtube series “Il Milanese Imbruttito“, will see the well-known Milanese manager (Germano Lanzoni), pass from a life full of money and women to a new life, and business: a chiringuito (basically a bartender) in Sardinia.
From the blue sea of Sardinia, we move directly to the ranches of Cry Macho, Clint Eastwood‘s latest effort, also produced by Warner Bros, which last week brought home another 314,993 euros (total 682,169 euros) as the fifth place in the ranking. Fifth place in the ranking goes to Clifford, the big red dog, and it is worth mentioning #6 Sing 2- sempre più forte (Universal productions) released as a preview only in a limited number of theaters and officially available in all cinemas from December 23. This time koala Buster Moon and his group of animals with a talent for singing will have to take part in a singing competition as a way of restoring the Moon Theatre to its former glory. The result? 260,391 euros in the box office.
The top ten goes on with Ghostbusters – Afterlife (#7) The Ice Road (#8) Eternals (9) and A Monstrous Family (10).
Among the expected new releases Spider-Man: No Way Home, arriving December 15 and already considered box office champion for the holidays 2021. On the streaming side Netflix Italy’s #1 is a little gem: Strappare lungo i bordi, the animated series revelation of the cartoonist Zerocalcare. The Roman dialect speech, the frequent sketches, are the background to a coming of age story that touches a very serious topic, suicide, with great sensitivity. As always Netflix does not reveal the numbers nor the views, but to understand the scope of the small series, just think that it exceeds (and by far) Narcos Mexico and Squid Game.
As for Sky Atlantic productions, all eyes are on the highly anticipated final season of Gomorra, which saw its debut on Friday, November 19. With 841.000 viewers on average, it has been the best debut of the last two years for a Sky production.
