Italian Box Office, February 7-13, 2022

After two weeks with the same movies at the top of the Italian box office, the week from 07/02 to 13/02 saw a clear change in the ranking.

Last week we wrote about the great expectations for the release of two movies: Death on the Nile by Kenneth Branagh and the first movie by the singer-songwriter Fabrizio Moro, Ice. The expectations were not disappointed, as we find Ice as the first Italian film, in sixth position and with a total grossing of € 108.291,  and Death on the Nile at the top of the box office with a portentous gross, considering the pandemic is still fully underway and in comparison to the numbers of the previous charts, of  € 1.823.197.

In second position we find a new title, again a U.S. production, Marry Me, starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson (€372,735).

In the top ten,   numerous confirmations and two other new entries: climbed from the first to the third position is The Fair of Illusion – Nightmare Alley (€ 338,872 – for a total of € 1,526,880), followed by The Wolf and The Lion (€ 273,363 – for a total of € 1,916. 590 € ) and Spider-Man: No Way Home in fifth position, still in the theaters and still at the top of the ranking after 2 months from its release (246,893 € – for a total of 24,203,793 €). After the already mentioned Ice, in the seventh position we find Me vs You – The film: Lost in Time (94,203 € – for a total of 3,360,697 €) and King Richard in eighth position (92,550 € – for a total of 1,335,514 €). Closing the ranking are two new European entries: English-produced After Love (€68,559) and French Le Discours (€52,745).

This week, on February 17, will be the long-awaited wide official release in all theaters of Ennio, the documentary by Giuseppe Tornatore  which celebrates the life and legacy of Italian composer Ennio Morricone who passed away on July 6, 2020. The film premiered only in the weekend of January 29/30 and had a very important audience, with a gross of € 316,000 in just two days in theaters.   On the same day, we will also see the release of another movie that will most likely be at the top of next week’s charts: the film based on the famous video game, Uncharted, starring Tom Holland (star of Spider-Man: No Way Home) and Mark Wahlberg.

Taking a more general look at the week’s box office, we see a slight growth, which is however strongly driven by the phenomenal numbers of Death on the Nile. With its total grossing, this film surpasses by more than 3 times the Thriller Noir by Guillermo del Toro Nightmare Alley, which had occupied the number one place at the box office during the previous weeks. These are significant numbers that we have not seen in Italy since the week from January 3 to 10, when Spider-Man: No Way Home had grossed € 1,696,309.

On the streaming platforms in Italy, the American dramatic mini-series Inventing Anna starring Anna Chlumsky and Julia Garner has conquered everyone on the small screen since its release on February 11. In a few days since its debut on the platform, the Netflix series is already in the first position as the most-watched series of the moment.
