Italian Box Office, March 7-14, 2022

Italian cinema is once again at the top of the weekly box office charts. In only four days of screenings, C’era una volta il crimine came close to reaching the podium, overtaking Death on the Nile and remaining behind only the two U.S. blockbusters Uncharted and The Batman and almost equaling Belfast.

The satirical crime comedy written and directed by Massimiliano Bruno is the third film of the saga that started in 2019 with Non ci resta che il crimine  and the sequel in which the protagonists have to face the Camorra. In this third narrative arc, the main characters go back in time, ending up in 1943, during World War II, to steal the Mona Lisa from the French. Marco Giallini (Moreno), Gian Marco Tognazzi (Giuseppe) and Edoardo Leo (Renatino) star in the lead roles, Carolina Crescentini plays Adele while Giampaolo Morelli replaces Alessandro Gassmann’s character, in the role of a history professor who helps the trio in their mission.

BTS Permission to dance on stage – the live concert from Seoul of the famous Korean boy band, shown in Italy only in The Space Cinema theaters – smashed the box office, conquering the second place, with € 403,613. It is undeniable proof that music knows no borders.

This week’s top films at the cinema – not taking into account the BTS concert –  see great confirmations except for the aforementioned C’era una volta il crimine in third place and the new entry The Alpinist.  In order: The Batman, with € 3,153,855 for a total of € 6,851,906 is still at #1; #2 goes to Uncharted (€ 474,254 for a total of € 5,614,613); #3 Belfast (€ 302,076 for a total of € 1,239,541) #4 C’era una volta il crimine  (€ 297,921); #5 Death on the Nile (€ 288,871); #6 The Duke (€ 274,360 for a total of € 551,894); #7  Ennio (€ 211,258 for a total of € 2,224,273); #8 The Alpinist (€ 111,790); #9 Lizzy and Red – Friends Forever (€ 102,424 for a total of € 215,433)

March 17th will be a day of great Italian and international releases: the long-awaited ninth film by Paul Thomas Anderson, Licorice Pizza, and the new romantic comedy by Riccardo Milani, Corro da te. After the success of Come un Gatto in Tangenziale – Ritorno a Coccia di Morto in the summer of 2021, this time the Roman director returns to the theaters with an amusing comedy. Pierfrancesco Favino is Gianni, who pretends to be a paraplegic to win the heart of lovely Chiara (Miriam Leone), a musician and tennis enthusiast who, despite the tragic accident that has seen her forced into a wheelchair, lives life with a smile. A brilliant film that shows how willpower and the desire to live are superior and stronger than any tragedy life can offer us.

Finally, important news for Italian production on the online platforms. On Netflix, the second season of Guida astrologica per cuori infranti has just been released, immediately gaining a spot into the topmost viewed of the week.
