Italian Box-Office week ending March 12, 2023

Michael B. Jordan is the king of the box office this week with his Rocky spin-off Creed III. The boxing movie, starring and directed by Jordan in his directorial debut, is still the champion of the Italian box office with a weekend gross of €61,000 and a total gross of over €5.5 million.

The Italian action thriller L’ultima notte di Amore followed with €51,000 for the weekend and a total of just over a million euros. The film, directed by Andrea Di Stefano, starring Italian favorite Pierfrancesco Favino, tells the story of police detective Franco Amore (hence the ambiguous title), played by Favino who, on the night before his retirement, is called to investigate a crime scene in Milan involving a friend. The thriller was shot in a cinema verité guerilla style that was very much appreciated by moviegoers.

Darren Aronofsky‘s The Whale, with Brendan Fraser in a fat suit, clinched third place at the Italian box office with €50,000 and a total of €2.1 million. The film’s good theatrical performance preceded Fraser’s win at the Oscars as best actor in a leading role for The Whale, which also won another Oscar for best make-up (for Fraser’s weight augmentation). The film is expected to get a second wind in the upcoming post-Oscar weeks.

The week’s great debut, Scream IV, performed slightly lower than expected with a gross of little more than €800,000. But there’s still time to catch up, right Ghostface?

The Oscar winner Everything Everywhere All at Once confirmed its popularity with Italian audiences by grossing €20,000 (and a total of a million since its debut), thanks to its return to theaters through distributor I Wonder Pictures. It’s expected to double the grosses in the upcoming weeks.

Rounding up the Italian box office week are Italian comedies Mixed By Erry and Tramite amicizia, followed by Hollywood’s Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania, the Warner Bros animated Mummies and an another Oscar winner (for best adapted screenplay), Sarah Polley’s Women Talking.

Upcoming this week at the Italian theaters are the much anticipated John Wick 4, Shazam! Fury of the Gods, and the French’s revival of Jean Eustache’s La maman et la putain (the mother and the whore), a 1973 forgotten nouvelle-vague film which is enjoying a print restoration and the renewed curiosity of hard-core cinephiles.
