Italy Box Office, July 18-25, 2022
While Thor-Love and Thunder stands alone – and afar- at the top of the Italian box office ranking for another week, one question arises: will domestic productions gain decent revenues in theaters? It appears that in Italy’s hottest summer ever, festivals are the only occasions in which moviegoers enjoy watching Italian movies: films are made for a broader audience than the ones limited to occasional venues. But that’s not happening in Italy.
Box office receipts are still down in Itay, which collected €1 million 492 thousand at the box office last weekend, down 35 percent from seven days ago (already a nosedive with -50 %).
As anticipated, Thor leads the top ten for the third week in a row, with € 1,215,957 in the week from July 18th to July 24th. The Chris Hemsworth movie so far has grossed €9,012,689, becoming the fifth best film at the Italian box office since the pandemic.
After nine weeks in theaters, Top Gun: Maverick, still has the second step on the podium: Tom Cruise‘s return 20 years later as the reckless military pilot grossed €232,474 and rose to over 11.4 million total.
The third spot is Elvis, the biopic about the American star, which grosses another € 202,719 and rises to 2.5 million in five weeks of programming.
In fourth place is Jurassic World: Dominion, with €111,190 (7.6 million in eight weeks).
In fifth place is Princess Mononoke, Miyazaki’s masterpiece, which gets €93,796 (for a total of €181,671), followed by Lightyear, the original feature created by Disney and Pixar, which grosses €86,060 and rises to €2.4 million in total.
The first new entry comes in seventh place: it is The Twin, which grossed €77,060 for a total as of yesterday of €88,000. It is followed by two other new releases: Mothering Sunday, which grossed €43,840 film adaptation of Graham Swift’s novel A Day of Celebration, and the animated film Peter Goes to the Moon with €42,290.
While the box office shows very small figures, the festivals, on the other hand, record great success with the public. Umbria Film Festival, directed by Paolo Genovese, closed in Todi with Giorgio Panariello’s show. The closing evening conducted by Elisabetta Ferracini saw also the performance of Marianne Mirage, accompanied by a string quartet that paid tribute to the great songs of Italian cinema.
The 14th edition of Marateale – International Award Basilicata is ready to start and will be held July 27-31 in Maratea, at the Theater by the Sea of the Santavenere Hotel. Five days dedicated to cinema, with events, screenings, and meetings, all open to the public, under the artistic direction of Nicola Timpone with the collaboration of Antonella Caramia. Godmother of the kermesse, actress Catrinel Marlon while among the hosts of the evenings, Carolina Rey, Beppe Convertini, Savino Zaba, Janet De Nardis, and Eva Immediato.
Many stars will be present at this year’s Marateale, including guests and awardees. Lino Banfi, Lorella Cuccarini, Luca Guadagnino, Claudio Amendola, Toni Servillo, Elodie will take the stage to tell their stories in a day-by-day talk.
