Italy Box Office, July 6th -July 13th, 2022

Thor, Elvis, Top Gun. A definitely male-dominated box office week comes to an end.

The last Marvel blockbuster to be released in Italy for the summer, performed just as expected. Out in theaters since Wednesday, July 6, Thor: Love and Thunder is already number one at the Italian box office. On its debut week, the film starring Chris Hemsworth grossed € 4,916,464 and has already reached almost 6 million.

In Italy, Thor is strong with a very large fanbase and a campaign that instead of the “usual” marketing played on the surprise effect. On the day of the film’s release, Natalie Portman – who in the film plays the god-superhero’s ex-girlfriend and magic-hammer wielding Jane Foster – surprised fans with a visit to The Space Cinema Moderno in Rome. Also in Rome, the actress attended a presentation of the film, with Ukrainian subtitles, at a sports center that houses some children who have fled the war.

Slipping to a second place is the musical biopic Elvis, with € 417,895 in the week coming in at € 2,108,379 total.  Top Gun: Maverick – released at the end of May – continues to hold in the top three. Despite a somewhat sluggish week, which is a gross of € 331,985, the film reaches the exorbitant figure of € 11,005,131 total. The sequel to the 1980s cult movie reaches third place also in the season’s top ten ranking, surpassing The Batman by about € 1 million.

In fourth place is Disney Pixar’s film Lightyear, which has been in theaters for a little less than a month and has grossed a total of € 2,214,068. Fifth place for Jurassic World – Dominion: the last movie from the dino-saga grossed € 38,844 this weekend, for a total of € 7.4 million.

Spirited Away, the animated classic film by Japanese maestro Hayao Miyazaki – back in theaters for less than a month – keeps on attracting fans. It grossed €164,001 this week, reaching a total of € 279,186. Black Phone takes on number seven with a weekly gross of € 108,000, and a total of just over € 600,000.

The only three Italian films to appear in the top ten seem to suffer greatly from a box office standpoint. Una boccata d’aria – a comedy set in Sicily starring Aldo of the popular comedy trio Aldo, Giovanni e Giacomo – debuts with a total of € 50,000, Nostalgia, Mario Martone’s film closes the week with only € 26,082 more than the previous week (reaching a total of € 1.3 million), and last La mia ombra è tua, starring Marco Giallini, which takes home € 25,669 for the week and 78,000 total.

Italian films perform much better on on-demand platforms.

The second season of the series Mare Fuori, directed by Carmine Elia and starring Carolina Crescentini, set in the Naples juvenile prison, immediately shot to second place of the most viewed series on Netflix Italy. While Corro da te, a romantic comedy starring Pierfrancesco Favino and Miriam Leone, ranked third among the most viewed films on Prime Italia.
