Italy Box Office, June 28-July 5th, 2022

A rather sluggish week comes to an end for the Italian box office. The total revenues in seven days didn’t make it to the 2.5 million euros mark. One movie proved to be a surprise, but it can’t be defined as a new entry: it is a great animation classic. That’s right because the main event of the film week was the return to theaters of Hayao Miyazaki’s The Enchanted City. The film took home € 102,000, earning 6th place in the standings.

Dominating the box office is still Elvis, the biopic about music legend Elvis Presley directed by Baz Luhrmann. The film has grossed € 740,328 and has been seen by more than 108,000 people, reaching more than a million in total box office just over a week after its release.

Top Gun: Maverick continues to hold, despite the film has been in theaters since late May. The action movie starring Tom Cruise directed by Joseph Kosinski – a sequel to the 1986 film directed by Tony Scott, attracted 62,945 moviegoers this week and € 457,032 euros at the box office.

Unfortunately for the space ranger, Lightyear‘s poor success at the box office doesn’t seem to change at all. The first Pixar film to be released in theaters after the pandemic failed to call in the hoped-for audiences, and with € 365,353 collected this week, it merely reached a total grossing of 2 million after three weeks on the silver screen.

But when it comes to new entries, Hayao Miyazaki‘s The Enchanted City is the leader of the week. The film will be screened throughout Italy until the 17th of August, along with other Japanese classics from Studio Ghibli like Princess Mononoke, Nausicaa in the Valley of the Wind, and The Wandering Castle of Howl, on the occasion of “Un mondo di sogni animati”, a festival organized by Italian production and distribution company Lucky Red. Miyazaki’s masterpiece reached 15,779 admissions and grossed € 102,916.

Much less significant numbers were those of La mia ombra è la tua, a film by Eugenio Cappuccio starring Marco Giallini, which arrived in theaters on June 29 and grossed only € 50,795. The Deer King, another Japanese animated film in theaters these days, grossed € 34,691.

In tenth place in the box office ranking, with really low numbers that testify to the need for new films capable of a substantial number of moviegoers, is the French comedy Mystery in Saint-Tropez. The film grossed € 29,244.

Now, all eyes are on the next releases: the biggest one is Thor – Love and Thunder, by Taika Waititi starring Chris Hemsworth, Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Chris Pratt, Matt Damon, Russell Crowe, Melissa McCarthy, Sam Neill, Dave Bautista, and Tessa Thompson. If the summer trend will be confirmed – and it will most likely be – the latest Thor is destined to become the only new big earner of the hot Italian summer. A summer where not a single domestic production is making it to the top. More than a hundred Italian films ready to be released are still on hold, probably until the Fall.
