Movie Valentines
Whether it’s romance, adventure or romantic-tragedy the following nominated and/or winners of Golden Globe awards are the perfect Valentine’s Day movies to tug at your heartstrings.
1) Romancing the Stone (1984) – A romance writer sets off to Colombia to ransom her kidnapped sister, and soon finds herself in the middle of a dangerous adventure.
2) Dirty Dancing (1987) – Spending the summer in a holiday camp with her family, Frances “Baby” Houseman falls in love with the camp’s dance instructor Johnny Castle.
3) When Harry Met Sally (1989) – Harry and Sally have known each other for years, and are very good friends, but they fear sex would ruin the friendship.
4) Love Story (1970) – A boy and a girl from different backgrounds fall in love regardless of their upbringing – and then tragedy strikes.
5) Somewhere in Time (1980) – A Chicago playwright uses self-hypnosis to find the actress whose vintage portrait hangs in a grand hotel.
6) Pretty Woman (1990) – A man in a legal but hurtful business needs an escort for some social events, and hires a beautiful prostitute he meets… only to fall in love.
7) Titanic (1997) – A seventeen-year-old aristocrat, expecting to be married to a rich claimant by her mother, falls in love with a kind but poor artist aboard the luxurious, ill-fated R.M.S. Titanic.
8) Love, Actually (2003) – Follows the lives of eight very different couples in dealing with their love lives in various loosely interrelated tales all set during a frantic month before Christmas in London, England.
9) Blue Valentine (2010) – The relationship of a contemporary married couple, charting their evolution over a span of years by cross-cutting between time periods.
10) Crazy, Stupid, Love (2011) – A middle-aged husband’s life changes dramatically when his wife asks him for a divorce. He seeks to rediscover his manhood with the help of a new-found friend, Jacob, learning to pick up girls at bars.
Cupid’s arrow is wound tight and ready to fly some more. In honor of the chocolate and rose-filled holiday, below is a list of ten of the top romantic films that are perfect for a relaxed night in.
1) It Happened One Night (1934) – Director Frank Capra’s favorite about a spoiled heiress who, after running away from her family, is helped by a man who’s actually a reporter looking for a story. Stars Clark Gable, Claudette Colbert and Walter Connolly.
2) Gone with the Wind (1939) – Victor Fleming and George Cukor’s classic about a manipulative Southern belle carrying on a turbulent affair with a blockade runner during the American Civil War. Stars Clark Gable, Vivien Leigh and Thomas Mitchell.
3) Casablanca (1942) – Michael Curtiz’s work detailing an American expatriate meeting a former lover, with unforeseen complications, in unoccupied Africa during the early days of World War II. Stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman and Paul Henreid.
4) My Fair Lady (1964) – George Cukor helmed tale of a misogynistic and snobbish phonetics professor who agrees to a wager that he can take a flower girl and make her presentable in high society. Stars Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison and Stanley Holloway.
5) Annie Hall (1977) – Woody Allen at his finest in the story of neurotic New York comedian Alvy Singer falling in love with the ditsy Annie Hall. Stars Woody Allen, Diane Keaton and Tony Roberts.
6) Out of Africa (1985) – Director Sydney Pollack’s famed work set in 20th century colonial Kenya, which finds a Danish baroness/plantation owner having a passionate love affair with a free-sprited big-game hunter. Stars Meryl Streep, Robert Redford and Klaus Maria Brandauer.
7) The English Patient (1996) – Anthony Minghella’s emotionally-driven piece set at the close of WWII, in which a young nurse tends to a badly-burned plane crash victim. His past is shown in flashbacks, revealing an involvement in a fateful love affair. Stars Ralph Fiennes, Juliette Binoche and Willem Dafoe.
8) Shakespeare in Love (1998) – Director John Madden led cinematic piece finding a young Shakespeare, out of ideas and short of cash, meet his ideal woman and is inspired to write one of his most famous plays. Stars Gwyneth Paltrow, Joseph Fiennes and Geoffrey Rush.
9) The Notebook (2004) – Nick Cassavetes’ beloved tale of a poor and passionate young man who falls in love with a rich young woman and gives her a sense of freedom – after which they are soon are separated by their social differences. Stars Ryan Gosling, James Garner and Rachel McAdams.
10) The Reader (2008) – Director Stephen Daldry’s post-WWII Germany set film finding law student Michael Berg re-encountering his former lover as she defends herself in a war-crime trial. Stars Kate Winslet, Ralph Fiennes and Bruno Ganz.
