On Music: The Eclectic Penélope Cruz
Spanish star and Golden Globe nominee Penélope Cruz is first to admit a strong affinity to music. “I have this very strong relationship with classical music because that was my first hobby, from when I was four years old and I started to go to ballet,” she says. “And sometimes I go back to that and in my own world with my headphones and listen to be Bisset or Chopin or all the things that I used to dance when I was little. For me, it has the same feeling of inspiration and creativity. And for me, music is the most important art. The one that goes straight to your heart with no filter.
Do you find music helpful as an actress?
_I use music a lot to prepare for scenes. For example, in (The Assassination of Gianni) Versace, Edgar (Ramirez) and I were doing that together, before a scene, we would listen either to opera or to Prince. And the combination of Prince and opera we thought were the most Versace combination that could exist. And sometimes George Michael too. So it would really put us in the mood of that scene and the Versace world. I use music so much. And sometimes it’s heavy metal and sometimes it’s hip-hop, it depends what the scene is.
Do you have a favorite band?
_ I don’t know why I have to say one. But I know I have a very special thing with U2.
