NAACP Image Awards: Golden Globe Winning “Encanto” Received NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Animated Motion Picture on Night Five
Friday night the NAACP Image Awards streamed its final pre-show presentation out of the week-long virtual experience inviting fans to join the Image Awards celebration of the outstanding achievements and performances of people of color across more than 80 competitive categories. The live show is set to air on BET tonight, February 26 with the Golden Globe nominee Anthony Anderson hosting, Golden Globe nominee Samuel L. Jackson receiving the NAACP Chairman’s Award, and Prince Harry and Meghan, The Duke and Duchess of Sussex receiving the prestigious President’s Award.
Friday night winners were named in several categories, and while the major focus of the night was on television, Outstanding Animated Motion Picture and Outstanding Independent Motion Picture were also announced.
Grammy winner Mary J. Blige, who is performing tonight at the 53rd NAACP Image Awards live show, received an award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in Drama Series for her role in Power Book II: Ghost.
The Golden Globe winner Daniel Kaluuya won NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture for his role in Judas and the Black Messiah, and the Golden Globe winner Regina King won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture for her performance in The Harder They Fall.
The Golden Globe winner Taraji P. Henson won NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special for her performance in the musical television special Annie Live!, with Kevin Hart announced as the NAACP Image Award recipient for Outstanding Actor in a Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special after the leading role in the True Story drama series.
NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Drama Series was handed out to Queen Sugar created by the Golden Globe nominee Ava DuVernay and executively produced by the Golden Globe winner Oprah Winfrey. Colin in Black and White, an inspiring drama about the teenage years of the former NFL quarterback and civil rights activist Colin Kaepernick he co-produced, was a double winner of the fifth night receiving NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Television Movie, Limited-Series or Dramatic Special and Outstanding Breakthrough Creative (Television) by Angel Kristi Williams.
After garnering the Golden Globe nomination earlier this year, the coming-of-age drama film CODA by Sian Hader was named the NAACP Image Award recipient for Outstanding Independent Motion Picture, while the Golden Globe-winning Encanto won NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Animated Motion Picture.
