Nominee Profile 2023: “Hacks”

Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy – Nominee
Last year the first season of the HBO Max show Hacks won two Golden Globes.  For Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, and Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for lead actress Jean Smart. Her co-star, Hannah Einbinder, also received a nomination in the same category.
This year, the second season of Hacks is again nominated for Best Television Series – Musical or Comedy, and both female leads are nominated for Golden Globes. Smart garnered a nomination for Best Performance in a TV Series – Musical or Comedy, while her co-star, Einbinder, is nominated for Best Supporting Actress – Television Series.
The second season of this comedy series created by Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, and Jen Statsky, again centers on the relationship between Deborah Vance, a legendary stand-up comedienne (Smart), and Ava Daniels, a young comedy writer (Einbinder), that are now developing both professionally and personally.
Season 2 of Hacks starts with Deborah and Ava returning to Las Vegas, with Deborah feeling excited to start fresh after her last show was considered a flop and to win back the city and her fans. Ava is racked with guilt after getting confirmation that her mean email about Deborah she sends out at the end of Season 1 was received by the writers of the show.
In its second season, this female-driven comedy covers quite a lot of events, including Deborah and Ava’s first tour, a lawsuit, a cruise, auction bids, and personal matters important for both ladies. This season also introduces a new character, Deborah’s eccentric tour manager played by Golden Globe-nominated actress Laurie Metcalf.
