Nominee Profile 2023: “The Dropout”
Best Television Limited Series, Anthology Series or Motion Picture Made for Television – Nominee
Hulu’s miniseries The Dropout is a biographical crime drama created by Elizabeth Meriwether, the showrunner of Golden Globe-nominated New Girl. Centered on Elizabeth Holmes, founder of Theranos, the series depicts her life experiences and digs into what could have triggered her deceptions, from her preteen years to the recent court verdict.
The Dropout is based on the 2019 ABC News podcast of the same name hosted by journalist/investment banker Rebecca Jarvis. The podcast follows the story of the notorious Elizabeth Holmes and Theranos, the biotechnology company she founded as soon as she dropped out of Stanford University.
Claiming that Theranos could complete a full range of blood tests with a single drop, testing for hundreds of diseases, Holmes became the world’s youngest female self-made billionaire in 2003. Lately, she was charged with defrauding investors and sentenced to 135 months in prison.
The story of her spectacular rise and fall became the subject of John Carreyrou’s book Bad Blood: Secrets and Lies in a Silicon Valley StartupThe Inventor: Out for Blood in Silicon Valley. Hulu’s The Dropout is the first streaming production by Searchlight Television.
The miniseries stars Golden Globe-nominated Amanda Seyfried as Holmes. Golden Globe nominee Naveen Andrews plays Sunny Balwani, Holmes’ business and romantic partner who was also the CEO at Theranos.
The Dropout is nominated for two Golden Globe Awards – Best Television Limited Series and Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series. For Seyfried, this is the second time in her career that she is nominated for a Golden Globe.
