For over 40 years the HFPA has recorded famous and celebrated actors, actresses, and filmmakers. The world’s largest collection of its kind – over 10,000 items – is now in the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences Margaret Herrick Library.Already a major star in her native Canada, singer Céline Dion became a worldwide phenomenon with her rendition of “My Heart Will Go On”, the love theme of the megablockbuster Titanic. Her pure voice can be heard in Disney’s animated hit Beauty and the Beast, plus Stuart Little 2, Bicentennial Man, Mona Lisa Smile, and, in 2012, the British comedy Unfinished Song. We met her that year and she talked about her vision of life, death, and beyond.“I definitely think that we are here for just a little short journey. The most important thing for me as a human being is to be emotionally balanced. And I don’t know a lot of people who are emotionally balanced.For me, Unfinished Song, the movie and the song, is about unfinished business. You should never expect the other one to come to you to fix the situation that goes wrong between those two people. If you want things to be right for you to move to a second level when you are going to another life if it exists, fix your things, answer your questions, be emotionally balanced, go to the person, it’s not about you were right, I was wrong, you were right – it’s beyond that.For me, the emotional balance is to find a place in which you were so comfortable with yourself, that even that if you are sure that you are not even part of the problems that occurred, that caused a little tension, you are so comfortable that you go forward and you pull it out of that person and you wish them well. So when you leave, it’s a finished business, it’s like you are ready to move on, it’s an opportunity of growth for me. And sometimes people are why me? Life imposes things on us we don’t choose, how we are going to go through it, how we are going to live it, that’s one thing. But when life imposes a little something that breaks, you are like why now, what’s happening and oh my goodness, it’s an opportunity for growth. And most of the time I am pretty sure that you can outgrow these events, and feel so proud. It puts you on another level.”
