ROSALIND RUSSELL’S GLOBE

The Golden Globe won by Rosalind Russell for her performance in 1961?s A Majority of One has been sold at auction for more than $40,000. The Hollywood Foreign Press Association presented Russell with the award for ‘Best Actress In a Musical or Comedy at the 1962 ceremony at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles.

The film depicted the dissolution of American animosity toward Japan in the years following WWII, with comedienne Russell portraying an American woman whose family disapproves of her budding interracial romance with a Japanese man. First a Tony-winning stage play by Leonard Spigelgass, the Warner Bros. film was directed by Mervyn LeRoy, with Alec Guinness starring opposite Russell. It was honored with multiple nominations and also won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy as well as Best Film Promoting International Understanding.

Russell holds the record for most wins in this category jointly with Julie Andrews at three. Her other wins were for her role as the title character in 1958?s Auntie Mame’ and for 1962?s Gypsy.
