Russian Box Office, February 14 – 20, 2022: “Uncharted” Retains #1 Position

Uncharted remains the #1 box-office earner in Russia: with just a 30 % drop versus its opening weekend, the first feature produced by Sony PlayStation Productions grossed 231 mln RUB ($3.1 mln) for a total of 675 mln RUB ($9 mln) since its release last week. The action-packed adventures of Nate Drake, a young fortune-hunter, have drawn another 656,058 moviegoers to cineplexes for a total of 1,980,295 people since the release on February 10, thus officially confirming Tom Holland’s status of one of the highest-grossing actors.

Kenneth Branagh’s Death on the Nile retains the position of the #2 highest-grossing movie. Dropping by 33% versus its opening weekend, the all-star murder mystery boasting the award-winning cast led by Gal Gadot garnered the attention of another 302,266 moviegoers, thus earning 119 mln RUB ($1.6 mln) for a total of 361 mln RUB ($4.8 mln). A mere comparison of 957,819 moviegoers who chose to watch an Agatha Christie’s detective novel adaptation during its two-week run in Russian cinemas, versus the total number of video-game buffs, who watched Uncharted since its release last week, prompts a suggestion that the post-pandemic box office in Russia is driven by a younger and most probably male audience.

The box-office newcomer of the week, the Russian drama Eleven Silent Men, comes in at the number three spot with 51 mln RUB ($677K) and grossed over its opening weekend. Needs to be mentioned, sports movies have always performed well at the Russian box office, especially the ones subtly meshing sports action and romance. Based on a true story about a series of football matches, this period sports drama, exhibited on 1,795 screens all over Russia, swept along 163,147 moviegoers.

It is followed by the Russian comedy Disobedient which dropped by 39 % versus the previous weekend and grossed 38 mln RUB ($507K) for a total of 232 mln RUB ($3 mln) since its release on February 3.

Opening at the seventh spot last weekend, the animated adventure film Fireheart breaks forth to the #5 highest-grossing release of the week. Set in jazz-age New York, the story of a young girl dreaming to become the first female firefighter gains 197 % versus its opening weekend collecting 30 mln RUB ($404K) for a total of 43 mln RUB ($570K) since its release a week ago. Obviously, quite a positive word of mouth has boosted the Fireheart sales up to another 118,758 tickets for a total of 167,357 admissions.

The third runner-up of the previous weekend, the romantic comedy Marry Me, suffered a 45 % drop versus its opening weekend and descended to the #6 spot, grossing 21 mln RUB ($276K) for a total of 80 mln RUB ($1.1 mln) since its release on February 10. The surprising below-expectation performance of a highly anticipated romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez, one of the top chart-busting singers, and co-starring Maluma, one of YouTube “Billion Views Club” members, might be explained by the fact that this Valentine’s Day fell on a Monday, literally not the best day for a romantic movie date.

Rounding out the top ten are, in order: the Russian animation Pinocchio: A True Story (16.5 mln RUB / $220K over its opening weekend); the Russian action film Once Upon a Time in a Desert (16.3 mln RUB / $217K over its opening weekend); Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall dropping 64 % from the previous week take and grossing 10.4 mln RUB ($139K) for a total of 224 mln RUB ($2.9 mln) since its release on February 3; and Sing 2 that earned another 8.8 mln RUB ($117K) for a total of 879 mln RUB ($12 mln) during its nine-week run.
