World Box Office April 16 – 22, 2018

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson can still claim the world crown title, but at home his position as the number one box office draw has entered into uncertain territory.

On its second outing, Rampage had no trouble dominating once again the worldwide box office, pulling in $57 million from 61 territories and easily crossing the $200 million mark. About half of it, $106 million so far, comes from China alone. Korea, Mexico and the UK have also been pretty good to Rampage, in which Dwayne Johnson plays a paleontologist fighting enormous beasts generated by a genetic test gone awry. The film still has room to grow, as France, Germany and Japan have not opened yet, but at home it was good for just $21 million and The Rock was scared away by A Quiet Place. On its third week release, John Krasinski’s horror movie reclaimed the top spot by grossing an extra $22 million, for a domestic total to $132 million. A Quiet Place is a surprise hit internationally also, generating $15 million in 57 markets for a total so far of $74.8 million. The global tally is now $207 million and major markets such as China, France and Japan have not opened yet. Horror sells: also, Universal and Blumhouse’s Truth or Dare is doing fairly well. Last week it opened in 18 new territories and the total so far amounts to $8 million. Domestically, it added $8 million and the global total is now close to $40 million.

I Feel Pretty, in which Amy Schumer thinks she looks like a supermodel, was number 3 on the domestic charts with $16.2 million. Five foreign territories added $2.4 million. Foreign territories keep appreciating Ready Player One. Steven Spielberg’s sci-fi ode to pop culture and to the 80s has crossed the $500 million worldwide mark, 200 of which were generated in China where it is now on the chart as one of the Top 10 Hollywood films of all time. It’s also the biggest Hollywood grosser of 2018. The US has generated $1 26 million so far, followed by the UK ($21.6 million), Korea ($18.3 million) and France ($17.3 million). Ready Player One is now Spielberg’s biggest success since Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull back in 2008

China also witnessed the debut of Wes Anderson’s Isle of Dogs. Playing on 13,000 screens, Fox Searchlight’s stop-motion animated picture got an excellent 8.5 score from its Middle Kingdom audiences and generated $4.2 million. The Silver Bear winner at the Berlin Film Festival collected $5.6 million from 14 other markets, for a total overseas gross of $15.2 million. On the domestic front, it expanded to almost 2,000 locations, which helped by adding $3.4 million. The total US gross, so far, is $24.3 million.

The global box office will go through a major shakeup next week, as Disney/Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War starts its run everywhere except Russia and China, where is expected to debut on May 11.
