World Box Office, April 5-11, 2021

While Godzilla vs. Kong continues its rampage at the domestic and international box office, Mortal Kombat managed to beat the MonsterVerse epic in Russia and even posted the biggest opening for a Hollywood release in the coronavirus pandemic era in that territory.

Director Simon McQuoid’s latest reboot of the Mortal Kombat movie series bowed at the Russian box office with $6.1 million, an amount that topped the pre-pandemic opening of several big hits.

The action-adventure-fantasy also opened in 16 other overseas markets and grossed an overall total of $10.7 million. Set to debut in the United States on April 23, the new installment of the franchise based on the video game stars Lewis Tan, Jessica McNamee, Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Chin Han, Tadanobu Asano, Hiroyuki Sanada, Mehcad Brooks, and Joe Taslim.

Internationally, the monsters were still kings. Kong and Godzilla drew $24.1 million and increased their movie’s overseas take to $288.3 million so far. China contributed $12.9 million to Godzilla vs. Kong’s international haul this weekend.

The American monster film has amassed $165.4 million in China although it has been settling for second place to a domestic release, My Sister. The movie that’s beating the two monsters in China is the collaboration of two women, director Yin Ruoxin and screenwriter You Xiaoying. Top-billed by Zhang Zifeng, the film focusing on a girl coping with her parents’ death and suddenly becoming responsible for her younger brother raked in $21 million.

Following Godzilla vs. Kong and Mortal Kombat in the offshore box office chart was the live-action/animation hybrid, Peter Rabbit 2: The Runaway. The sequel, directed by Will Gluck and starring James Corden, Elizabeth Debicki, Lennie James, Margot Robbie, Rose Byrne, and David Oyelowo, grossed $2.8 million in Australia and New Zealand. Peter Rabbit 2, which will not open in the North American market until June 18, has collected $10.2 million so far in just those two countries.

Bob Odenkirk’s Nobody earned $2.37 million to place fourth. The revenge movie featuring an everyman hero, directed by Ilya Naishuller and also starring Connie Nielsen and Aleksey Serebryakov, has grabbed an international cumulative of $13.2 million.

In the North American box office, Godzilla vs. Kong also reigned with $13.38 million. The top grossing movie of the COVID-19 era has already scored $69.5 million.

Nobody ranked second with $2.65 million for a total of $15.63 million so far. The Unholy, a horror flick with Jeffrey Dean Morgan, came in third with $2.4 million. The supernatural film, whose cast also includes Diogo Morgado, Katie Aselton, William Sadler, Cricket Brown, and Cary Elwes, has taken in $6.73 million to date.

Disney’s Raya and the Last Dragon went down to number four with $2.14 million. So far, the animated film which showcases the first Southeast Asian Disney princess (voiced by Kelly Marie Tran) has brought in $35.24 million.

Bowing to a wide release was Voyagers, writer-director Neil Burger’s tale of a crew of astronauts that’s described as Lord of the Rings in space. With a cast led by Colin Farrell, Lily-Rose Depp, Tye Sheridan and Fionn Whitehead, the sci-fi thriller mustered $1.35 million.
