World Box Office, Aug 1-7

Suicide Squad murdered the box office this week with a record smashing $135 million home market debut. It took 2014 Guardians of the Galaxy’s August opening crown, grossing almost 50% more than Marvel’s global hit. Good news has its limits though – Suicide Squad looks likely to be hobbled by a troubling B+ Cinemascore. Far reaching advertisement highlighted the film’s comedic elements and showcased its many stars – Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Jared Leto Jai Courtney, Viola Davis and Cara Delevingne, with particular focus being cast on Leto’s trailer –pimp Joker. While it was enough to get lots of people into theatres, a 46% Friday-to-Saturday drop is a worrying sign that the initial buzz may be starting to die down. Smith plays an assassin named Deadshot who is coerced into leading a team of villains on an impossible campaign against the goddess Enchantress (Delevingne). Despite the mixed response, the film has already made back its budget and if Batman v Superman is anything to judge by it could very well continue on to a notable haul.

Warner Bros. will be very pleased with the films international launch as well, after it made $132 million in 57 overseas markets. Smith and company nearly doubled Guardians’ debut figures and is just 100 grand off of shock hit Deadpool’s foreign debut figures. At $13.9 million, the UK is its biggest away market. Russian audiences meanwhile turned out in droves to give Warner its biggest local debut of all time with $11.3 million. Given the ruble’s stark decline over the past two years, this figure shows that the film was a huge hit in the ex-Soviet nation. Squad managed to take home the same figures in Brazil where excitement for the Olympics has been overshadowed by protests and controversy, dampening the event’s effect on the box-office in large. Australia hosted another salient opening, pitching in $10.6 million, while Korea made $10.7 million and Mexico generated $10.4 million.

Still on the international scene, this week’s second biggest opening went to Chinese production Time Raiders. The Daniel Lee directed project grossed $70 million in its first week in theatres. It stars Jing Boran, the star of superhit Monster Hunt, and follows the adventures of a family of professional tomb-raiders in their adventures. It also beat The Secret Life of Pets, which opened on Tuesday in the Middle Kingdom and has earned $28.9 million there to date. Universal’s animated hit has now crossed $500 million worldwide, but will likely be pushed aside by Disney’s Pete’s Dragon when it opens next week.

Jason Bourne’s second week abroad netted $20.9 million, taking the Damon revival’s offshore total to $91.9 million. New market India was worth $1.1 million, a big number for the billion-person nation’s surprisingly small box office. U.S. earnings this week were $22 million and took the picture’s international cume to $195.4 million.

Next week we’ll have a chance to follow the debut run of Pete’s Dragon, a live action family film from director David Lowery. Also moving into theatres is the Meryl Streep and Hugh Grant comedy Florence Foster Jenkins and Seth Rogen’s Sausage Party.
