World Box Office, February 1-7, 2021

This Soul has life and it continues to soar.

On a traditionally slow Super Bowl weekend in the United States, made more sluggish by the coronavirus pandemic, the big news was in the international box office, where Pixar’s Soul keeps rising.

With its overseas earnings reaching $96.2 million after seven weekends, the first Pixar movie to revolve around an African-American protagonist (voiced by Jamie Foxx) is poised to hit the $100 million mark soon. Soul officially became the second biggest earning Pixar release in China and dislodged Incredibles 2.

With its recent $1.7 million earnings adding to the animated film’s overall tally of $56 million in China, Soul has a long way to go from outranking Coco as the top Pixar release in the world’s largest movie market. Coco hit $189 million in China in 2017.

Topping the Chinese box office in this recent weekend is Shock Wave 2, the action film produced by and starring Andy Lau, which made $4.86 million for a cumulative ticket sales of $196 million.

The romance-drama A Little Red Flower, featuring Jackson Yee, Haocun Liu, Yuanyuan Zhu and Yalin Gao, placed second with $4.6 million for total earnings of $216 million so far.

Also staying strong is Big Red Envelope, a comedy topbilled by Clara Lee and Bao Bei Er, which nabbed the third spot with $4.3 million and added to the film’s overall haul of $32.8 million.

These robust figures reflect how China is one of the few markets in the world that is performing impressively amid the COVID-19 health crisis.

In other overseas markets, Soul held on to its top ranking in Russia and Korea. With its cumulative take of $11.6 million, the Pete Docter-directed movie is now the third biggest Pixar release in Russia. In Korea, the movie has grossed $10.1 million after taking in $2 million.

Still on the international box office race, The Little Things, a neo-noir crime movie with Rami Malek, Denzel Washington and Jared Leto, raked in $1.4 million on its second weekend. Now showing in 22 markets, The Little Things earned $5.2 million so far.

On the domestic front, The Little Things clung to the number one position with $2.1 million for a total of $7.8 million. The John Lee Hancock-directed film is also streaming on HBO Max under WarnerMedia’s day-and-date release strategy which is being closely watched by Hollywood industry analysts.

The Croods: A New Age hung on to its second place rank, with ticket sales of $1.76 million. After 11 weeks, the animated adventure-comedy has amassed $46.02 million.

Liam Neeson’s The Marksman took the third spot with $1 million, bringing the action-thriller’s cumulative take to $9.11 million.

Wonder Woman 1984 placed fourth with $905,000. After seven weeks, the DC Extended Universe installment increased its cumulative domestic take to $40.3 million. Gal Gadot’s superheroine movie raised its worldwide tally to $154.5 million.

Still making it to the top five is Monster Hunter, which drew $585,000 in ticket sales.

Among the films bowing in limited release, Earwig and the Witch, a family-fantasy animated movie directed by Goro Miyazaki, managed to earn $100,000.
