World Box Office, January 24-30: Spider-Man is a Billion Dollar Hero

Spider-Man: No Way Home has now reached the $1 billion benchmark internationally. With this feat, the Tom Holland blockbuster joins an elite list of ten movies that reached the $1 billion milestones overseas.

The 27th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is the box office wonder of the pandemic season, with an offshore total of $1.003 billion and a global cumulative of $1.74 billion. Box office pundits stress that No Way Home’s billion-dollar benchmark is remarkable since the movie did it without a run in China.

Domestically, the Jon Watts-directed movie is still on top after earning $11 million for a total of $735.89 million. Having been number one for six weeks out of its seven-week run, No Way Home claims yet one more title: it holds the record for having the most weekends on the top for any superhero flick or comic book adaptation.

The film that assembled the three actors who played Spidey – Holland, Andrew Garfield, and Tobey Maguire – eclipsed Black Panther’s record of five weekends at number one in 2018. But in this millennium, Avatar still has the title of the most weeks lording it over the North American box office charts with seven weekends.

The all-time record holder is Steven Spielberg’s 1982 E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial which topped the box office for 16 weekends.

Speaking of Avatar, No Way Home is about $24 million away from surpassing the former as the third biggest earning movie ever in the domestic market. James Cameron’s 2009 epic hit grossed $760.5 million.

While most of No Way Home’s weekend ticket revenues came from the West, it was still strong in the East despite many areas being blanketed in deep snow.

In the meantime, yes, there are other films in the moviegoing universe. Scream 5 took the second spot in the US and Canada with $7.35 million.

Coming in third was Sing 2 which earned $4.8 million. Director D.J. Caruso’s Redeeming Love, dubbed as a Christian western romance and with a cast that includes Abigael Cowen, Tom Lewis, and Famke Janssen, finished fourth with $1.8 million.

Ralph Fiennes’ action-adventure-thriller, The King’s Man, drew $1.75 million to take the fifth slot.

Making up the rest of the top ten were, in order, The 355 ($1.4 million) for a paltry $13.09 million total despite its sterling cast: Penélope Cruz, Jessica Chastain, Lupita Nyong’o, Diane Kruger, and Bingbing Fan; American Underdog ($1.23 million); Ghostbusters: Afterlife ($770,000); Licorice Pizza ($691,000); and West Side Story ($614,000).

In the offshore charts, No Way Home raked in $21.1 million in over 60 territories. The most successful Spider-Man movie ever is also the biggest earning Marvel film in nearly 20 countries, including the UK, Mexico, Argentina, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, Turkey, and Israel.

Ranked second offshore was Sing 2 which garnered $17.4 million. The coronavirus pandemic period’s biggest animated feature hit has now racked up $133.4 million in overseas ticket sales and $268 million in global earnings.

Belfast, Kenneth Branagh’s valentine to his childhood city, remains solid in the UK with $8.4 million haul.

Scream 5 ended up with $6.5 million in more than 50 territories.

Guillermo del Toro’s crime-drama-thriller Nightmare Alley, starring Cate Blanchett, Bradley Cooper, and Toni Collette, was reportedly at the top of the charts in Italy, Mexico, and Russia but figures were not yet available.

China’s box office action is expected to be phenomenal when the world’s biggest movie market celebrates the Chinese New Year. Among the hotly anticipated films are Han Han’s Only Fools Rush In, Muye Wen’s Nice View, and Hark Tsui’s Water Gate Bridge, the sequel to the blockbuster, The Battle at Lake Changjin.

In the domestic race, No Way Home may finally be toppled by either Roland Emmerich’s Moonfall, featuring Halle Berry and Patrick Wilson, or Jeff Tremaine’s Jackass Forever, with Johnny Knoxville.
